This month’s guest librarian is Kristin’s cat, Bitsy! Bitsy is always curious and eager to understand her people better. She loves food, naps in her heated bed, being carried around like a baby, and sitting in laps while books are consumed. She thinks that everybody should read more cat-centric books, so she’s selected a few of her favorites to share.

The Dybbuk (1937) takes place in a shtetl (small village) in Eastern Europe where the spirit of a deceased bridegroom in the form of a "dybbuk" possesses the body of his formerly intended bride on her wedding day. This classic movie is based on the iconic play by S. Ansky written during the turbulent years of 1912-1917.

Newly restored with English subtitles by the National Center for Jewish Film.
Presented by the Yiddish Book Center's Public Libraries Program, in partnership with the ALA and funded by the Lilly Foundation, Inc.

Join journalist and educator Rokhl Kafrissen for this exploration of the folk magic and culture of Eastern European Jewry. Among Yiddish-speaking, Eastern European Jews, possession often took the form of a dybbuk, a wandering, sinful soul trapped between worlds and seeking refuge in a living body. We will look at the figure of the dybbuk in various Yiddish stories written over hundreds of years, as well as the little known "birth" of the dybbuk in the mid-16th century. This is a hybrid event - you can watch this virtual presentation from home or the library. Registration required - please sign up on our website.

Presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center’s Public Libraries Program, in partnership with the ALA and funded by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
