North Carolina has the seventh-worst economically segregated public school system in the country, a new survey shows.

The survey highlights the “uniquely harmful” dangers that poverty and disproportionate access to a quality education continue to pose 72 years after the US Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling found that racially segregated schools were unconstitutional.

North Carolina teachers, who are among the lowest paid in the country, face even greater challenges in classrooms where most of the students are from low-income households, the study says.

The economic gap that the study found in NC is not new.

The funding and resource divides between wealthier and poorer counties in NC were the foundation of the yearslong Leandro court case that accused legislators of violating the state constitution by failing to provide a sound, basic education to all students.
