Metro West recently welcomed Fire Inspector/Investigator Mick Fischer during a pinning ceremony at the last Board of Directors meeting.

Mick brings more than 32 years of fire service experience to Metro West, including eight years as Fire Chief of the Cedar Hill Fire Protection District. Throughout his career, he has served as a firefighter, EMT, engineer, lieutenant, chief officer, and now as a fire inspector/investigator.

The ceremony was especially meaningful as Mick was pinned by his son, who continues the family tradition of service as a firefighter with Cedar Hill Fire. Family members, friends, and colleagues were also in attendance to celebrate this special milestone.

After a distinguished career in Jefferson County, Mick chose to begin a new chapter at Metro West, where he now conducts commercial building inspections, plan reviews, and fire investigations to help keep our community safe.

Please join us in congratulating Mick and welcoming him to the Metro West family. We are grateful to have his experience, leadership, and commitment to public service on our team.

We are grateful to Russell Kinsaul and KMOV for telling the story of Metro West retired Captain Russ Hamilton and helping shine a light on the realities of presumptive firefighter cancer. Russ' story represents a challenge faced by firefighters across the country and a burden carried by many families. We appreciate the opportunity to continue this important conversation.

Cancer is the leading cause of death for firefighters. What’s causing this is much of what surrounds people inside their homes.

Metro West is proud to announce we have earned recognition through Missouri's Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Pediatric Prehospital Readiness and Excellence Program (PEDS PREP). This recognition acknowledges EMS agencies who have made pediatric care a priority through specialized equipment, training, and preparedness.

Children aren't simply small adults. Caring for them requires different equipment, different treatment approaches, and ongoing training. Through programs like this, Metro West firefighter/paramedics are helping ensure we are prepared to provide the highest level of care for our youngest patients.

Metro West Engineer/Paramedic Jason Marren was recognized by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) for his leadership in establishing the Professional Fire Fighters of Eastern Missouri Local 2665 Peer Support Team.

Jason played a key role in developing the program, helping create a structured resource focused on supporting firefighters' mental health and well-being. Through his leadership and guidance, the team was built to provide peer-based support following difficult calls, critical incidents, and personal challenges.

The fire service is built on trust, teamwork, and looking out for one another. Jason's efforts helped strengthen that commitment by fostering a culture where firefighters feel comfortable seeking support and helping their peers.

Congratulations, Jason, and thank you for your dedication to the well-being of all firefighters!

When roads flood, don't gamble with your safety. Floodwater may look shallow, but it only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle off the roadway. Hidden debris, washed-out pavement, and strong currents can turn a routine drive into an emergency. If you come across a flooded roadway, TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN. The best rescue is the one that never has to happen.

This weekend, Metro West firefighter/paramedics are proud to support the 2026 Spirit of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo alongside our neighbors from the Monarch Fire Protection District. In the fire service, serving our community doesn't stop at a district boundary. Whether responding to emergencies through mutual aid, assisting during natural disasters, or helping provide safety at large scale community events, we all work together to serve.

Before today’s modern fire trucks, advanced medical care and specialized rescue teams, there were neighbors who saw a need and stepped forward to serve.

Metro West’s story began in 1934 as the Community Fire Association, built on a simple mission to protect the people who call this community home. Over the decades, that commitment grew and evolved into the Ballwin Fire Protection District and eventually the Metro West Fire Protection District we know today.

While much has changed over the years, one thing has remained constant: a commitment to service.

From volunteer beginnings to today’s highly trained firefighter/paramedics, every generation has helped shape who we are. We are proud of our history and grateful for those who came before us.

Recently, members of the Metro West Dive Team trained at the Lafayette High School pool, participating in stress inoculation drills designed to build confidence and composure in challenging underwater environments. These exercises require divers to control their breathing, remain focused, and work through stressful situations while underwater. Training like this helps prepare divers to operate safely and effectively when responding to emergencies where conditions may be unpredictable and visibility is limited.

Last week, Metro West firefighter/paramedics spent time with summer camp counselors from the City of Ellisville Parks and Recreation, providing hands on training in CPR, AED use and first aid ahead of the busy summer camp season.

From recognizing emergencies to learning lifesaving skills, this training helps ensure counselors are prepared to respond with confidence should an emergency arise. We appreciate the City of Ellisville Parks and Recreation’s commitment to safety and the opportunity to support those caring for children throughout the summer.
