Towanda’s swimming pool will be closed today for investigations and follow-up from a break-in.

Parks provide meaningful recreation, but this summer we’ve had a series of issues at the City’s park, including a break-in of the concession stand building, someone driving through the basketball court fence causing extensive damage, and last night’s break-in.

These are not victimless crimes. They cost taxpayer resources for repairs and result in cancelations or facilities being unavailable. If you are aware of any information about any of the incidents, please contact the Butler County Sheriff.

Transformation Tuesday: Towanda's pool was coated in peeling layers of paint and other materials that had been used to patch it over past decades. Thanks to the hard work of our Public Works crew, the pool was sandblasted, concrete repairs made, new paint applied, and lane lines added to support swim leagues and other expanded activities.
Additionally, earlier this year Council authorized replacing the pool's aging filters (a filter outage would have shut the pool down for several weeks.)
City staff are completing final prep and testing and anticipate opening day for the pool will be on or around June 1.

With severe weather in today's forecast, we want to remind the community that we are continuing to look for a community solution for storm shelter operation and will have an opportunity for community feedback on storm shelters and police protection from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at City Hall.

At this time, there is not a public storm shelter option in Towanda, and we encourage all community members to have a plan in place for where they can be safe in severe weather.

For additional information and shelter-in-place resources, please visit

The City has been receiving questions about storm shelters in light of spring severe weather forecast, and we want to provide information and updates on local storm shelter services.

The City of Towanda continues to seek community feedback on public safety services, including police protection and a community solution for storm shelters.
We have two opportunities to share thoughts in the coming days:
1. Visit us 9-12 Saturday, May 16, in the Council Room at City Hall in and around garage sales
2. We'll be set up during the lunch hour 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 18, in the Council Room

We've seen lots of questions recently about the Ohio Street roundabout project east of town and checked in with Butler County officials for answers.
At this time, the construction is being delayed a couple of weeks and now will start May 26 (day after Memorial Day). The project is expected to be complete in October 2026, if weather cooperates.
