👶 Every baby deserves a strong start. For some families, that begins in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

In this video, Dr. Erik Thingvoll shares what you can expect if your baby needs NICU care. Dr. Thingvoll is a neonatologist and NICU medical director with our broader HCA Healthcare network.

Each year, more than 200,000 babies are born in HCA Healthcare hospitals — and some arrive earlier than expected. According to March of Dimes, about 1 in 10 babies in the U.S. are born prematurely, meaning they are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

HCA Healthcare is proud to partner with March of Dimes to help improve outcomes for moms and babies. Find more helpful information about NICU care from March of Dimes: https://bit.ly/4qTr59f

When newborns need specialized care, response time and teamwork matter.

Beginning Aug. 31, Wesley Healthcare added dedicated emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to the LifeWATCH Neonatal Transport Team, strengthening the 24/7 transport support available for babies who need a higher level of care.

These EMT colleagues will drive the neonatal team to referring hospitals and airport shuttle runs. During ground transports, they also can assist the care team as an extra set of hands for critical patient care. The team includes advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists and dedicated EMTs, with expert neonatologists available 24/7 through Wesley Healthcare’s role as a regional perinatal center.

“Our team is excited to have dedicated EMT drivers who are part of the LifeWATCH team and available around the clock,” said Katie Filby, APRN, neonatology, Wesley LifeWATCH. “This supports our goal of getting out the door in less than 30 minutes when a baby needs us.”

The dedicated ambulance and in-house EMT support are designed to help improve response times to referring hospitals while further strengthening neonatal transport care across Kansas and beyond.

Wesley Healthcare's LifeWATCH Neonatal Transport Team has served families since 1974, bringing specialized neonatal expertise to babies when and where it is needed. Explore Wesley Healthcare’s neonatal care services: https://bit.ly/4gztB0M

For 50 years, Toby Shields has cared for patients, supported families and inspired colleagues in our Cardiac Neuro Intensive Care Unit.

Today, we had the privilege of celebrating Toby’s extraordinary nursing career by surprising her with the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes nurses who have devoted their life’s work to compassionate care, mentorship, advocacy and the positive image of nursing.

“Toby has an amazing ability to look through the chaos and heal not only the body, but the person inside as well,” said Ali Schlyer, critical care manager. “The love and kindness this woman shows to everyone she meets is the perfect definition of what a nurse’s heart should be.”

Please join us in congratulating Toby on this well-deserved honor and thanking her for 50 years of meaningful, patient-centered care.

🐾 Meet Daisy and Mickee, some of Wesley's four-legged friends making a meaningful difference for patients, caregivers and families. This National Dog Day, we’re celebrating them and the joy they bring every day.

Facility and therapy dogs are valued members of our broader HCA Healthcare family. These specially trained companions can brighten someone’s day and may help reduce stress, anxiety and feelings of isolation. Some even have their own badges and earn anniversary pins for their years of service.

The benefits of dogs go beyond clinical settings. Pets can offer unconditional love, comfort and companionship — and encourage us to move more.

Whether they’re bringing calm to a care setting or adding a daily dose of pawsitivity to our lives, dogs truly make a difference.

Sepsis can happen when the body has an extreme response to an infection. It can become life-threatening quickly, so knowing the warning signs matters.

In this video, Dr. Sydney Hester, an infectious disease doctor with our broader HCA Healthcare network, shares what to watch for and when to get emergency care.

At HCA Healthcare, our Sepsis Prediction and Optimization of Therapy (SPOT) system continuously monitors vital signs, lab results, nursing reports and other data to detect often subtle changes in a patient's condition and alert clinicians to signs of sepsis so they can take appropriate action.

If you or someone you love may be experiencing signs of sepsis, don't wait. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room: https://bit.ly/4c6kTEG

Every August, we recognize the Graduate Medical Education (GME) professionals who help prepare the next generation of physicians.

As part of HCA Healthcare, Wesley Healthcare is connected to a GME network spanning 87 hospitals in 16 states. Our GME professionals help make residency and fellowship programs possible — supporting program operations, accreditation, compliance and the learning environments where residents and fellows train, grow and care for patients.

To our GME professionals, thank you for the expertise, dedication and behind-the-scenes support you bring to medical education, clinical excellence and the future of healthcare.

When you or a loved one needs emergency care, your closest option may be a freestanding emergency room (FSER).

An FSER provides 24/7 emergency care similar to a hospital emergency room, but it’s located separately from a hospital campus. Offering convenient access to emergency care, FSERs can help you get the care you need close to where you are. Wesley Healthcare has three FSERs: Wesley West ER, Wesley Derby ER and, our newest, Wesley Andover ER.

In this video, Dr. Brad Hoover, an emergency physician with our parent company, HCA Healthcare, explains what to expect during a visit — from check-in and evaluation to treatment — and how, if you need hospital-based care, our connected network can help coordinate the next step.

Each year, approximately 10 million patients receive emergency care across our broader HCA Healthcare network. Every visit is different, but our goal is always the same: to help you get the care you need when it matters most.
