Hot take: planting more trees might be one of the best things we’re doing in Wichita right now.

I love trees, and we’re actually backing that up. Last year alone, Wichita planted about 2,100 new trees across the city.

In the right of way, those trees are city-managed, which means we plant them, maintain them, and only remove them when they’re dead, unsafe, or causing real infrastructure issues.

And because residents spoke up, we’ve been working through a longstanding backlog of tree requests and making real progress getting more trees in the ground faster.

More shade. Better neighborhoods. A canopy that lasts.

If you’ve got a spot for a tree, let’s keep growing Wichita 🌳

Tonight I attended a Braver Angels debate in Wichita about the proposed sales tax and it honestly gave me hope for our city.

I heard thoughtful, good-faith arguments from both sides. Some people support the tax as a way to invest in public safety, infrastructure, and long-term stability. Others oppose it because they don’t trust government, worry about accountability, or feel burned by past promises. Those concerns are real, and they deserve to be taken seriously.

There are people of good faith on both sides of this issue. Everyone in that room wants a safer, stronger Wichita, they just disagree on how to get there.

Is the sales tax perfect? No, nothing government (or humans in general) touches ever is, but because progress usually comes through imperfect tools. The real work is building guardrails, demanding transparency, and holding elected officials, including me, accountable.

Real questions were raised tonight, and it’s our responsibility as elected officials to answer them honestly and clearly. Whether someone votes yes or no, what matters most is that people are engaged, informed, and speaking from a genuine concern for Wichita’s future.

That’s what I saw tonight and it gives me a lot of hope.

Honored to be elected Vice Mayor of Wichita.

Progress isn’t pretending problems don’t exist. It’s choosing reform over retreat and believing this city is worth investing in.

Grateful for the trust of the people of Wichita. Let’s get to work.

This week, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to tour the expanded Emergency Department at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph. This ER has almost doubled its capacity for patients, adding 21,000 square feet. The biggest difference now is they have created space for 20 rooms and a specialty care area with 11 beds for mental health patients. This is a huge service for our community. Thank you, Ascension Via Christi, for your commitment to Wichita! Pictured with me are (front row) Jackie Carnahan and Sarah Clemons and (back row) Dr. Maurice Duggins, Bruce Witt, and Claudio Ferraro.
