Early this morning Platte County Search and Rescue was requested by Platte County Sheriff's Office to aid in the search for two lost persons on the North Platte River between Glendo and Guernsey. The two individuals left the Glendo area yesterday and concerned recreationists reported they had not arrived at Wendover by late yesterday. This morning a search was conducted with the following agencies involved, Platte County sheriff's Office, Platte County Search And Rescue, Albany County Sheriff's Search & Rescue, Wyoming State Parks, and Wyoming Game and Fish. By late morning the couple were found alive and well. They were not aware that they were lost or missing. They were following their original plans. Concerned recreationists did not realize their plan and thought it was odd for others to be out as late as they were.

We do appreciate their concern, we would much rather be called early and have an outcome like this than be called late and have a tragic outcome.

It was with great teamwork from multiple agencies coming together at a moments notice that led to a good outcome.

Perfect weather at the lake today. The forecasters got it right and we didnโ€™t have winds coming in strong until eight. The dogs did really well even on the relatively new source. Aro decided it was all too slow and jumped shipped to go to source. Asa, Attica, Koa, Tori and Pi made us proud.

Every time a hiker is rescued, the same reactions flood social media.

They usually fall into five groups:

โ€ข Thanking Search & Rescue for their service
โ€ข Expressing gratitude that the hiker is alive
โ€ข Blaming the hiker for โ€œputting SAR at riskโ€
โ€ข Calling the hiker names
โ€ข Complaining that โ€œtheir tax dollarsโ€ paid for the rescue/or the hiker should be fined.

Only the first two save lives.

The others create something dangerous: fear of asking for help.

When people see injured hikers publicly shamed, mocked, or accused of being a burden, it influences decisions in critical moments.

And thatโ€™s how a rescue becomes a recovery.
Thatโ€™s how injuries become fatalities.

Search & Rescue would rather be called early โ€” when someone is cold, lost, or hurt โ€” than later, when they are unconscious, hypothermic, or missing.

The ugly comments may never disappear, but we hope some will pause before adding another one.

Shame doesnโ€™t make the mountains safer. It makes them deadlier.
Early calls mean smaller searches, safer rescues, and better outcomes โ€” for everyone.

The goal is not to punish people for needing help.
The goal is to get them home alive.
