The appeal of Westport as a community is due to the cumulative actions of residents who, over the years, as individuals and in groups envisioned what was possible and what the town could achieve. “Coalition for Westport” (CFW) intends to continue in that tradition and work for the future of Westport. CFW recognizes that Westport is an outstanding community endowed with natural beauty, appealing fa
cilities and exceptional neighborhoods. It is an organization of Westport citizens focusing on land use and planning with the goal of preserving the best from the town’s past while providing a positive vision of the path toward its future. Sustaining Westport’s appeal into the future requires responsive planning, flexible decision making and well thought out regulations if it is to retain its residential character and meet the future needs of local government operations, commercial establishments, non-profit organizations and of course, residents of all ages. CFW will be an active, positive voice working to enrich the public discussion on planning, land use issues and applications; endorsing candidates for public office; and encouraging and entering into public dialogue regarding the future of Westport. Without taking a position and any specific application or process currently before the Planning and Zoning Commission, the following are the kinds of positions it would likely support:
A) The view that not every building that Westport will ever need has already been built. B) A dynamic rather than a static view of Westport’s future. C) Open minds and open forums on ideas and plans that service our community without undermining its unique stature and reputation. D) Efforts to evaluate the needs of residents, commercial and non-profit enterprises, and Town government operations. E) The development of Town-wide long-range planning to accommodate those needs. F) The 2020 effort to actively engage a public dialogue on the nature and shape of potential changes for downtown Westport. Any expenses are paid for by The Committee to elect Press, Torve & Payne.
