As many of you have heard or saw, Friday morning at approximately 2:00 AM, Princeton Junction Volunteer Fire Company, West Windsor Professional Firefighters and our members were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with entrapment on Route 1 South at Washington Road.
Upon arrival, crews found a serious two-vehicle collision involving a passenger car and the tractor portion of a tractor-trailer. One occupant was trapped inside the vehicle. Ladder 43 responded with four members, and through the rapid and coordinated effort of West Windsor Professional Firefighters, our crew, EMS personnel, and all responding agencies, the victim was extricated and transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment.
As the investigation continued, Route 1 South remained closed while the West Windsor Police Department and Mercer County Prosecutor's Office safely documented and processed the scene. The New Jersey Department of Transportation and New Jersey State Police Incident Management Response Team (IMRT) provided traffic control and road closures on both the southbound and northbound lanes of Route 1.
During this operation, as investigators concluded their work and tow operators began preparing the vehicles for removal, a second tragic incident occurred. Despite multiple road closures, emergency vehicles, warning devices, and DOT personnel directing traffic, a vehicle drove around the closures and entered the active accident scene. Numerous members of the fire service, West Windsor Police Department officers, Mercer County Prosecutor's Office investigators, DOT personnel, and tow operators narrowly avoided being struck.
Unfortunately, the vehicle collided with the trailer involved in the original crash. Firefighters and EMS personnel immediately sprang into action once again, working quickly to gain access to the driver and provide emergency care. Tragically, the injuries sustained were fatal.
We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the members of the Plainsboro Professional Firefighters Association - Local 4954 who responded to assist during the secondary incident. Their professionalism, dedication, and willingness to answer the call for help exemplify the strong bond shared between our agencies. Plainsboro has long been a trusted mutual aid partner, and their support during difficult incidents like this serves as a reminder that no department stands alone. We are fortunate to work alongside such an outstanding group of firefighters and EMS professionals, and we thank them for their assistance during a challenging and tragic morning.
Incidents like these serve as a stark reminder of just how dangerous emergency response work can be. While our members train for fires, rescues, and medical emergencies, one of the greatest dangers we face is traffic passing through—or around—emergency scenes.
We would like to thank every agency involved for their professionalism, teamwork, and dedication throughout this long and difficult incident. From firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, prosecutors' investigators, DOT workers, New Jersey State Police IMRT personnel, tow operators, and dispatchers—everyone played a critical role. Crews remained on scene until approximately 9:00 AM before finally clearing.
We ask the public to remember:
🚨 SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER. It is the law.
🚨 Never drive through a road closure. It is closed for a reason.
🚨 The inconvenience of a detour is insignificant compared to the risk posed to emergency responders and roadside workers.
Every cone, flare, police car, fire truck, and road closure is there for a reason. Please respect them.
Help us make sure everyone goes home safely at the end of their shift.
