Though actually the second studio in Hollywood (Nestor was first), the Lasky Feature Play Co.'s barn became the first major studio, Paramount. It is the largest surviving silent film artifact snd studio. As a museum it's 40, but in real life turns 135 this year.

Japonism grew in the United States after Commodore Perry returned from Japan in 1853. The wealthy went so far as to construct Japanese gardens to demonstrate their success and artistic attitudes. Yanashiro and Wattles' Gardens were the most famous, but Sessue Hayakawa's film studio, Metro, and others, gad their own gardens as well.

May is Preservation Month. Hollywood Heritage takes an active role in historic preservation in Hollywood, and working to preserve the historic built environment. Before the pandemic, Hollywood Heritage shepherded the Musicians' Union on Vine Street through the process, and saw it named a Cultural Heritage Monument.

The "foremost entertainers and studio musicians" of the 1950s were members of the union.

Eleanor Jones was Hollywood's first librarian, and she was an expert in outreach and community involvement. She established a little lending library at the Hollywood Hotel and conducted research for early film studios, as well as organized art exhibits, children's programs, and current event discussions. Her most important accomplishment was inspiring the building of the Hollywood Studio Club, providing a home to single women coming to Hollywood to try and make it in the movies.

100 years ago today, the Hollywood Sign was premiered when it was illuminated for the first time. The public was invited to come watch the illuminataion. It cost $23,502, a billboard to promote the Hollywoodland development. Badly constructed and taken care of for decades, it is now a worldwide icon.

After 3 years of restoration, the Egyptian Theatre reopens November 9, focusing more on Sid Grauman's 1920s vision for the theatre, and not later renovations.

Netflix and the American Cinematheque will reveal the extensive restoration of Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre on Nov. 9 with a screening of The Killer.
