Christine Birkett for D300 School Board

Christine Birkett for D300 School Board This is the page for D300 School Board Candidate Christine Birkett. I truly appreciate the education that I received as a D300 student.

Bio:

Raised in Algonquin, I was a student in the first Kindergarten class to attend Neubert Elementary School, followed by Dundee Middle School, and finally, a graduate of Dundee Crown High School. Thanks to the dedication of my teachers and the motivation I received from them throughout my schooling (especially Ms. Ostewig), I graduated with confidence in myself and abilities and the skillset ne

eded to go on to successfully pursue further education at Millikin University. After marrying my husband, we made the choice to live in this community because of the many things that make this a wonderful place to raise a family – our park district, recreation areas, libraries, and last but not least, our schools. Now as the proud parent of a D300 student, I’m witnessing first-hand how the district has changed over the years to provide even more opportunities and programs to its students with the goal of providing engaging and inclusive educational experiences that empower and equip all students to discover, innovate, and succeed now and in the future

My experience and background:

I have spent the past 20 years working in Educational Publishing. My work has instilled in me a drive to make the educational experience for students as engaging as possible with the goal of igniting a life-long passion for learning. While I’m not a trained educator, being involved in the development of educational materials for use in classrooms has given me insight into much of what goes into our children’s education such as: teaching methods, learning styles, interventions, curriculum, state standards and customizations, accessibility, content delivery options, and current trends. This insight along with the skills that I use daily in my role as a Creative Director: creative-thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, would make me an effective board member. In addition, I have been a very involved member of the community, including: serving as a part of the D300 Community Leadership Academy, former board member for Shared Harvest Food Co-op, youth soccer coach, Sleepy Hollow Elementary School PTC Committee Chair, and frequent volunteer at school events. Why I'm running:

“I will continue to be a passionate advocate for public education and the needs of the District 300 community.”

As a life-long resident, graduate, parent, and current board member, I care deeply about the District 300 community. While serving on the board, I have learned a great deal about what is involved in operating a district as large and as diverse as ours. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the essential role that public education plays in developing future generations. My knowledge in the areas of curriculum, governance, school finance, policy, and safety will be beneficial in advocating for the needs of our community, making informed and strategic decisions, and providing stability from the board as we work through the challenges that lie ahead. If re-elected, I will focus on these goals:

• Advancing strategies and initiatives that ensure all students grow and succeed socially, emotionally, and academically

• Supporting teachers and staff in their work to create and deliver purposeful and engaging learning experiences

• Retaining and recruiting educators and staff who are passionate about our students’ education and well-being

• Expanding existing programs to provide more opportunities and support for our students’ aspirations

• Increasing opportunities for student voice to make sure that students feel heard, accepted, valued, and safe

• Engaging with the community to understand varying perspectives and working collaboratively to address community priorities

• Maintaining a fiscally sound budget that wisely spends our tax dollars and balances our current needs with our plans for the future

As my campaign for re-election to the D300 School Board comes to a end, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the residents who took the time to speak with me about their experiences with our district and ideas on how we can continue improving our district. Many people share my concerns about the future of public education and the mounting challenges we face in ensuring that ALL students have access to a high-quality education, resources, and opportunities.

As a life-long resident, graduate, parent, and current board member, I care deeply about the District 300 community. While serving on the board, I have learned a great deal about what is involved in operating a district as large and as diverse as ours. My knowledge of current/past district programs and initiatives, curriculum, governance, school finance, policy, and safety will be beneficial in advocating for the needs of our community, making informed and strategic decisions, and providing stability from the board as we work through the challenges that lie ahead.

I hope my dedication, experience, and vision for D300 earns your vote on Tuesday, April 1st!

For those who are not following D300 Board of Education Election - April 1, 2025, here are my answers on this week’s topic “curriculum”. Thank you to moderators and the community for asking these questions to be informed when casting their votes for D300 School Board members.

Q1: Are you familiar with the "science of reading" movement and how would you support our teachers and students to get all kids reading on-grade level?

Yes, I am very familiar with the Science of Reading as someone who works in Educational Publishing and as a sitting board member. D300, like school districts across the country, are faced with the challenge of figuring out how to raise students’ scores in ELA (and Math). On January 24th, 2023, I voted along with the rest of the board to adopt a new ELA curriculum which is aligned to the Science of Reading instructional model. This evidence-based and research-backed approach is a return to the foundational skills of phonics which are proven strategies for improving literacy outcomes for all learners. Staff began to receive training throughout the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year and over the summer so we could begin to implement the new curriculum when students returned in August for the 2023-2024 school year. We are already seeing the hard work that our educators have put into learning and implementing the new curriculum in their classrooms improve students’ ELA scores. We continue to monitor students’ progress throughout the school year to ensure that they are making adequate gains, adjusting and providing additional resources, supports, and training as needed. I believe the shift to a curriculum that supports the Science of Reading was the right move to improve our students’ reading skills and that we will continue to see positive outcomes.

When considering new curriculum, should representation of the different cultures in our community be a value that is considered during the selection process?

Yes, we absolutely must ensure that any new curriculum we adopt and that our library collections provide our students with engaging materials that include a wide range of cultures, topics, experiences, and perspectives. Diversity and representation are included in the criteria that Curriculum Review Committee uses when evaluating submissions.

What vocational and pathways programs would you like to see added or expanding and are there any you think should be removed?

The CTE / Pathways program provides students with the opportunity to explore areas of interest for potential careers through real-world experiences, while growing their skills, knowledge, and confidence for their pursuits in higher education or careers. D300’s CTE program is a model example that other districts aim to emulate. Our CTE team has done a tremendous job growing our offerings each year and I fully support further the expansion of the program. In addition to adding new offerings, we’ve expanded the program so that majority of the pathways are now at all three of our high schools, ensuring that more students can participate.

In our high schools, we currently offer:
· Veterinary Science
· Electrical Technology
· Graphic Design
· Entrepreneurship
· Early Childhood Education
· Elementary and Secondary Education
· Computer Programming
· Advanced Manufacturing
· Welding Technology
· STEM/Engineering

Additionally, D300’s Dual Credit Program in partnership with ECC provides our students access to even more options such as:

· Automotive Service Technology
· Basic Nursing Assistants Training and Clinical Lab Technology
· Business & Financial Services
· Communication Design
· Computer Aided Design
· Criminal Justice and Digital Forensics
· Culinary Arts, Pastry Arts, Restaurant Management
· Early Childhood Education
· Fire Science & Safety – Fire Protection
· Information Technology
· Welding

When considering expansion, I think it’s important to survey students to see what their areas of interest are. Currently, our students are expressing the most interest in adding programming that support future careers in the medical and emergency services fields. The CTE team has been actively collaborating with local businesses and emergency services departments to look for partnership opportunities to further grow our offerings.

Our current Master Facilities plan includes the possibility of building a D300 CTE center in a central location. This would provide the necessary space to offer more programs, especially ones that cost-prohibitive to replicate in all three high schools. I’m very excited about the potential this concept provides to increase offerings and make them accessible to all D300 students.
