Did you know that the firefly is Pennsylvaniaโ€™s official state insect? These beloved โ€œlightning bugsโ€ are a familiar sign of summer, but their numbers have been declining for decades due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and excessive nighttime lighting. The good news is that residents can help protect fireflies right in their own yardsโ€”and even participate in a nationwide firefly count organized by the Xerces Society.
