I would like a moment to consider the proposal put forth by the Washington County Board to rename a section of Highway K after Charlie Kirk.
While this has nothing to do with the West Bend City Council, this is the type of spending proposal I am against if government funds are involved. If a private group wishes to do something of this nature, that's their business. It should not be the business of your elected officials.
My objections to this are fiscal. Priorities of all levels of government should be focused on more important issues that have positive impacts on more people. If we're going to spend money, and that's pretty much what government does, we have to get as much value for as many people as possible. We cannot waste money on a project that has people in open conflict before that project has even had a full vote. The divisiveness of this issue is mind-blowing and should be strongly considered in the future by whomever is responsible for this idea in the first place. Throwing a can of gasoline on a bonfire to determine which way the wind is blowing is very bad form, indeed.
There are plenty of issues on which the vast majority of West Bend and Washington County can agree. We all received the same property tax increases at Christmas time. We all drive on the same roads, swerve to miss the same potholes, and rely on the same police and fire protection to keep us safe. It is on these issues I intend to place my focus and effort if I am elected on April 7.
I encourage you to do the same.
