The Digital Music Archive Of The Midwest

The Digital Music Archive Of The Midwest This digital archive is an open collaborative that documents the history of alternative music in the Midwest. This includes all genres outside of Punk Rock.

This digital archive is an open collaborative that documents the history of alternative music in the Midwest ranging from the years 1977-2004. Because of our limited space we have adopted a unique "catch and release" policy in regards to donations. We take in paper based documentation, produce a digital copy, upload it to this page, and return the documents. We are looking for anything that documents the history of alternative music in the Midwest.

Local music and DIY culture is so fluid that I often compare it to a flowing creek. You can never put your foot in the same spot twice. That is why I strive to capture these unique snapshots of cultural history. 1867 Bar has been a refuge of DIY and local music for many years in and is going through some large changes. Attached to this post is a statement from the owner Kelsey Graves and photos I took documenting the last show at the venue with Kelsey as the owner.

What places do you remember that are gone now?

Thank you for making a wonderful safe space Kelsey!

"With a heavy but grateful heart, I want to share that this Friday will be my last Friday at 1867 Bar. I’m thankful to be finishing my time here, and while it’s bittersweet, I’m also excited to step into what comes next.
I opened this place as a 24 year old with an idea and a lot of learning and curveballs ahead. I leave as a fulfilled 34 year old, with a self respect I could only have dreamed of when I opened.
Thank you to every person who walked through these doors, who shared a drink, met friends, built relationships, and made memories within these walls. This bar became more than I ever imagined it could be.
Thank you to the brewers, distillers, bands, and artists for allowing me to showcase your work this past decade. I’m so thankful to have met you and for the friendships I’ve formed with each of you. You are all so amazingly talented I am blessed to have known you.
Thank you to my phenomenal staff for sticking with me through this process and seeing us to the end, I am forever grateful for you. My love for you is everlasting and I can’t wait for that giant jenga bonfire.
You all became my family. This place became my home.
I will always cherish the time spent here and carry with me every lesson learned, every friendship formed, and every moment that made 1867 what it was. Thank you for being part of this journey and for helping shape something truly special.
As I move forward, 1867 will also be moving forward. The bar will be changing names, a decision I made knowing how closely the name has been tied to me. I want to share that the new owners will be keeping it a music venue, something I know has been important to our community. They have wonderful plans to elevate the space and take it even further. I wish them nothing but success and continued love from this community.
Lastly, I invite you to my (very last minute) goodbye party this Friday, February 6th. My dear friends in Blowing Chunks, Phuzz, Weaving Shadows, and Pilot Light will be tearing up the stage.
I look forward to saying goodbye and celebrating one last time together.

Happy African American History Month. Enjoy these photos of African Americans learning Judo in the 1950's in what I understand to be the greater Chicago area. Sadly on account of historical bias the history these photos and a lot of African American history has been lost to the sands of time. Please support the Great Plains Black History Museum to help make sure no more of it is lost! If you wish to support civil rights as they currently stand please join or donate to the NAACP and give them a follow!

How to put this?
The owner of this page's home burned down. Everything for this archive is backed up on a cloud and we don't keep paper anything so everything is alright on that end. But we could use some help with the day to day. Thanks!

If you can please donate cash or food to your local foodbanks. Donating food is very punk rock. Cash is very important because it allows the foodbank to get higher quality protein and nutrition that may not normally be donated. https://www.lincolnfoodbank.org/donate/

Despite having a Masters In Library Science with a emphasis in digital archives I never visited Nebraska History Museum. Last month I finally went! I had a fantastic time. Probably my personal favorite was the recording of MLK from the now closed Pershing Auditorium. Interesting enough they have a massive archive of events that happened at Pershing. What is your favorite part of the history of Nebraska?
