There's nothing quite like introducing a brand-new enrichment item and watching unique personalities decide what they think.
Recently, we received a donation of Palmyra nuts—a novel food item for our orangutan residents. Since they'd never experienced them before, there were plenty of different reactions.
Some orangutans were instant fans, digging right in. Others approached with a little more caution (like Pumpkin, who you’ll see in the video exploring it first). And for a few, the fun really began after the fruit was gone. Bailey turned the hard nut core into a hammer, while Jam carried his nut everywhere for days, tucked securely in his foot. (And then there's Pongo...well...you'll see. 😄)
That's one of our favorite parts of providing enrichment. There's no "right" way to explore something new. Every orangutan interacts with the world differently, and those individual choices tell us so much about who they are.
