Juneteenth — June 19th — is a pivotal day in American history. On this day in 1865, the Union Army rode into Galveston, Texas, to announce that President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in rebel states two and a half years earlier. Later in 1865, the United States officially abolished the practice of slavery with the ratification of the 13th Amendment. It is vital that we all recognize the significance of this day for our nation and acknowledge the strength and resilience shown by so many Americans in the campaign for racial justice that continues to this day. 🇺🇸

Much progress has been made since our nation’s founding, but we know the work is not complete until we achieve true equity and justice for all Americans. At Vista College Prep, we are committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our decision-making process, and we are steadfast in affirming the value, intellect, and promise in every member of our school community. We will never stop advocating for our students, all of whom deserve a high-quality education offering the opportunities they need to be successful. 🎓

This week, President Biden signed a bill to establish Juneteenth National Independence Day as an official federal holiday: https://www.npr.org/2021/06/17/1007602290/biden-and-harris-will-speak-at-the-bill-signing-making-juneteenth-a-federal-holi
