This week, we welcomed Undersecretary of the Army Mike Obadal to Ellsworth Air Force Base to showcase the incredible work happening in South Dakota and the important role Ellsworth plays in supporting our military.

We visited VRC Metal Systems and received briefings from Dakota State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Aerostar to highlight the work these organizations are doing to help our military. South Dakota continues to play an important role in keeping our nation safe and secure.

Visited Sisseton today for the grand opening of Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate’s Adult Detention Center. With many significant challenges during construction, this day was a long time coming. SWO’s leadership recognized the importance of this facility and continued to see the project through. Thank you to all who made this possible, and thank you to the brave law enforcement officers who will staff this facility and keep the area safe.

Thank you, President Trump! These four meatpackers, two of which are foreign owned, control over 85 percent of the market.

Expanding opportunities for state-inspected meat processors to sell across state lines is key to increasing competition. I’ve introduced bipartisan legislation with Senator Angus S. King, Jr. to address this. It’s long overdue that we give smaller, independent producers a greater opportunity to compete.

Appreciated the opportunity to attend today’s groundbreaking for the East Creek Village project spearheaded by Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity. I was pleased to work with them to secure $3.03 million in funding for this project, which will construct 42 new housing units in Rapid City. This is a great example of what can happen when good people work together.

This hurts! American cattle producers have been disadvantaged for far too long. What our market really needs is a stable, America-First national policy that promotes American beef rather than continuing to import foreign beef as a quick “fix.” This instability harms hardworking American ranchers and consumers who want American-made beef. This is the exact opposite approach we take compared to manufacturing, and it doesn’t make sense.

Now more than ever, we need Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling. Opening the market to even more foreign beef, which American consumers cannot differentiate because of current labeling rules, will only exacerbate the problem and hurt domestic producers. Our producers will compete all day long, but only if there is a level playing field. Beef prices will come down when American ranchers have a greater ability to supply more product. There isn’t a silver bullet but MCOOL and the RANCH Act are common sense solutions.

The president said he would temporarily allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported into the U.S. without paying higher tariffs.
