There’s something seriously wrong with the way some Airbnb rentals handle cleaning fees. You pay $200 just for cleaning, yet before you leave, you’re expected to wash dishes, strip the beds, run the laundry, empty every trash can, and haul garbage to a dumpster. All while making sure you’re out the door by 10 AM.
At that point, you have to ask yourself: If guests are responsible for doing all these things, what exactly is the cleaning fee paying for?
To be clear, nobody is suggesting that guests should leave a property looking like a disaster. Treating someone else’s home with respect is the bare minimum. But there’s a big difference between cleaning up after yourself and being expected to handle a list of housekeeping duties after paying a substantial fee for professional cleaning.
A vacation rental is supposed to make your trip easier, not turn your final morning into a work shift. People book these places to relax, enjoy their time away, and leave without having to worry about completing a checklist of chores.
The fact that some hosts consider these demands perfectly reasonable is what makes the situation even more frustrating. If cleaning is a paid service, then the expectations should be clear, fair, and proportionate to what the guest is being charged.
Airbnb has a responsibility to ensure that customers aren't paying extra for a service while being required to do much of the work themselves.
Guests should leave a property in good condition. They shouldn't have to wonder whether their next vacation booking comes with an unpaid housekeeping job.
