Last Thursday was a celebratory day here in Little Rock.

Not only were we celebrating the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History on their 25th anniversary, but Team Hill had a chance to preview their newest exhibit: “Manufacturing Victory in Arkansas: Supplying the Battlefront and Changing the Homefront During World War II.”

Last week, I joined nearly 588 delegates at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway for the 85th Boys State opening session. I spoke about what civic engagement actually demands, the work ethic, the leadership principles, the willingness to learn from failure as much as from success.

Tuesday brought 555 delegates to Benson Auditorium at Harding University in Searcy for Girls State. The energy in the room was incredible and the welcome was warm. It was clear from the start, these young women were having fun, but they were also ready to work and to learn.

I was honored to speak at the rededication of the Arkansas Medal of Honor Memorial at the State Capitol on Memorial Day.

The ceremony recognized four Arkansas heroes who received the Medal of Honor for their actions: John Canley, Samuel Johnson, George Kenton “Ken” Sisler, and Daniel R. Edwards.

Their names belong on this memorial. Their courage and sacrifice make Arkansas proud.

This morning at the Arkansas State Memorial Day ceremony, I had the opportunity and privilege of meeting veterans, family members, and friends of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation.

It was also a pleasure to see my friend Sharri Briley again after having her in Washington earlier this week, as the House passed the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act, a bill I was proud to cosponsor from the start.

May we never forget the sacrifice of our fallen heroes and their families.

It was an honor to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bauxite Community Center this Memorial Day weekend.

May we never forget the hard-working people whose sacrifice and spirit built the foundation upon which we stand today.

The Bauxite Community Center is more than historic. It is living history.

Thank you to the Bauxite Historical Association and Museum, Dr. Russell Burton, and board members for your work in helping preserve this great piece of history and a landmark for your community. Thank you Shane Broadway for the invite and the opportunity to speak. And thank you COL (ret.) Ronnie Stuckey for leading our honoring of veterans, on this Memorial Day weekend.

Earlier this week, I voted to pass the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act, a bipartisan bill that delivers long-overdue support to Gold Star families and catastrophically injured veterans. I am proud to have co-sponsored it from the start.

Named in part for my friend and Little Rock native Sharri Briley, a Gold Star widow who lost her husband, Donovan “Bull” Briley, and fought for this moment for years.

The decision to name this bill in her honor is a fitting and heartfelt tribute to his memory and to her tireless advocacy on behalf of surviving spouses.

Today, we honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who answered the call and never came home.

The price of freedom is paid by real people who left real families behind. To the Gold Star families who carry that loss not just today, but every day: your sacrifice is seen, and your loved ones are not forgotten.

We will always remember what it cost.
