I hate to say goodbye and ending my time on the Council representing you is bittersweet. Over the last eight years we have all worked together to build a better District of Columbia through smart public policy and strong community engagement. We have made historic progress in my tenure as your At-Large Councilmember, fundamentally changing how our schools support and prepare students for academic and personal success, how our families balance their work and home lives, and how our government and elections operate more ethically.

This year, at least 350 people have been murdered as a result of transphobic violence globally, with a majority of them being women and 36 of those lives being here in the United States. Today on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we remember and mourn the lives lost and recognize the resilience of transgender communities and individuals who continue to live and fight against hatred.

As a community, we must do more to create a safer world for transgender and gender non-conforming people by not only speaking out against hatred and prejudice but advocating for better resources and accessibility.

To recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance, celebrate the resilience of transgender individuals, as well as declares today, Friday, November 20, 2020, as “Transgender Day of Remembrance” in the District of Columbia, I introduced the Transgender Day of Remembrance Recognition Resolution of 2020.

I had a great time celebrating this past weekend in Malcolm X Park. It was amazing to honor the rich history and culture of the Native & Indigenous peoples who inhabited this land long before us.

Special thanks to the Piscataway Indian Nation and Tayac Territory, the American Indian Movement (Mid-Atlantic Region), & all other organizations involved for organizing this important event and for inviting me to be a part of it!

There are many resources out there if you, a friend or loved one is need. Remember, you don’t have to be a professional to begin the conversation and check on someone.

This commemorates the 100th anniversary of the , which granted women the right to vote. While this law allowed for white women to exercise their right to vote, it obstructed voting access for Black and brown women for the years that followed.

Today is not only a day to celebrate women, but a reminder that every day we must advocate for reproductive rights and equal pay, protect against gendered violence, and do more to advance gender equality.

On July 28th, the D.C. Council finalized FY2021 budget, deciding on a budget that blunts the impact of the pandemic and supports our residents in various ways.

Reflecting on my final budget, I couldn’t be prouder as this budget invests in social change by honoring Indigenous People's Day, funds the implementation of Universal Paid Leave and maintains community investments.

I’ve spent nearly 6 years as Chairperson of the Committee on Education. Reflecting on my final budget, I couldn’t be prouder as this budget invests in community mental health, housing, reproductive health freedoms, and more.

On July 28th, the D.C. Council finalized FY2021 budget, deciding on a budget that blunts the impact of the pandemic and support our residents, especially our students.

I’ve spent nearly 6 years as Chairperson of the Committee on Education. Reflecting on my final budget, I couldn’t be prouder as this represents the fourth straight budget of increased investments in our schools and a continuation of my work to replace the school-to-prison pipeline with school environments that make our students feel safe, loved, and valued.

Thank you to Richard Reyes-Gavilan and D.C. Public Library for an amazing tour of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial library. The architecture & content within this building highlights local Black history & all 6 levels hold tremendous tools of knowledge for each person who steps inside.

After a three year long renovation, the new library hub will re-open on Sept. 24, 2020 following CDC guidelines.
