Twenty-five years ago, our nation watched an unthinkable tragedy unfold. Today, the Armenian Assembly of America joins Armenian Americans and communities across the country in remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including members of our own Armenian-American community.

We also honor the first responders and everyday Americans whose courage and sacrifice reflected the very best of our nation.

To the families, friends, and loved ones who continue to carry that loss, we remember with you. We will never forget.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Elaine Khachaturyan is a rising junior at the University of California, Los Angeles, pursuing a B.S. in Biochemistry with a minor in Biomedical Research. As a dedicated pre-med student and part of the Assembly's summer internship program, Elaine is interning with MedStar Health, where she assists in Sports Cardiology clinical research, the Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine department, and administrative staff with patient experience research. She plans to pursue a career in medicine with a focus on orthopedic surgery and emergency medicine.

"My time in D.C. has been an exceptionally eye-opening experience. Apart from working with physicians at the forefront of medicine, it has been an incredible privilege to be surrounded by successful and inspiring Armenian Americans. Having the opportunity to advocate for Armenian issues on Capitol Hill has instilled in me a deep connection to my Armenian heritage. By speaking up, I have gained confidence, pride, and honor. This internship has given me great passion, knowledge, and memories that have helped shape me into a well-rounded and knowledgeable individual, proud to represent the Armenian people!"

During the House Ways and Means Committee hearing on securing critical resources and supply chains, Rep. Mike Carey (R-OH) raised the Armenian hostages held in Baku — making it clear that their release must be secured as the United States deepens economic ties across the region to counter Chinese and Russian influence.

Access to critical minerals cannot be traded for silence on the Armenian hostages.

The Armenian Assembly welcomes the launch of the California State Assembly's first Select Committee on California and Armenia Mutual Trade, Art, and Cultural Exchange — spearheaded by Assemblymember John Harabedian (AD-41).

The committee will work to expand trade and investment between California and Armenia, strengthen educational exchange, promote Armenian art and culture, and elevate California's Armenian American community.

Assembly advocates and board member Valina Agbabian attended the inaugural hearing. They also held meetings throughout the day to raise pro-Armenian advocacy priorities with members and staff, including the release of Armenian hostages.

: Mary Manukyan is a rising junior at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, pursuing a double major in International Affairs and International Business with a concentration in security policy. Originally from Rockville, Maryland, Mary spent this summer interning in the office of Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) through the Armenian Assembly of America’s Terjenian-Thomas Internship Program, handling constituent casework and working directly with federal agencies to resolve issues facing her own community.

“For me, being Armenian was never the hyphenated half of Armenian American; it was the foundation everything else was built on. Language, food, the history we inherited before we understood it, that came first, and it shaped how I move through every institution I’ve since entered, including this one. This internship gave that identity a place it rarely occupies, the halls of Capitol Hill. Sitting in on hearings and meeting with representatives who’ve spent years championing Armenian issues, from genocide recognition to continued support for Armenia’s sovereignty, I found myself less concerned with proving I belonged in American politics and more concerned with what I owed to those who came before me.”

: Emma Armeghanian is an English major at UCLA, and an aspiring attorney. She is passionate about serving her community through leadership, advocacy, and public service. Through her involvement in Armenian organizations, volunteer work, and academic pursuits, she strives to make a meaningful impact and use her education to create positive change. As part of the Assembly’s summer internship program, Emma interns at Meduni, a nonprofit organization dedicated to modernizing healthcare in Armenia, and at the Armenian Assembly of America, where she contributes to advancing Armenian-American advocacy and strengthening U.S.-Armenia relations through public policy and civic engagement.

“To me, being part of the Armenian American community means carrying forward the resilience, culture, and values of my ancestors while building a future rooted in opportunity and service. It means honoring our history, preserving our language and traditions, and supporting one another across generations. I am proud to be part of programs that both preserve our heritage and work toward a stronger future for Armenians around the world. I hope to continue giving back to my community through advocacy, service, and leadership while inspiring others to do the same.”

The Summer Sendoff Mixer in CA, brought together Assembly members, intern and Advocacy Summit Scholarship alumni, and friends for an evening of networking and community.

Guests heard from Glendale Mayor and Terjenian-Thomas intern alum Ardy Ardashes Kassakhian, Councilmember Alek Bartrosouf, and Assembly Western Region Director David Ojakian on civic engagement, public service, advocacy, and ways to stay involved with the Assembly.
