We're grateful to Washington Post for covering how some transgender veterans purged under the Pentagon's ban are not receiving the separation pay they are owed; pay that is necessary to survival as they try to rapidly find a job, housing, and healthcare in the civilian world.

One veteran featured, Chloe Shapiro, is a SPARTA Pride member who served honorably and on multiple deployments. After forcing her out, the military refused to give her the separation paid she was promised, and she struggled to pay for relocation to a safer state and housing. Chloe was able to utilize one of our emergency microgrants to stay afloat during this time. Tonight the DOJ asked the Supreme Court to intervene in Talbott v US and allow the trans military ban to continue, even though another Circuit Court recently affirmed an injunction against it. We will be back with more updates once we consult with the legal teams.

Last Friday night, the DoD quietly released its Congressionally-mandated Annual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military for FY2025 — three months late. What’s even more concerning: LGBTQ+ data is missing, even though it was included in this report for the last few years and consistently found significantly higher rates of sexual assault against LGBTQ+ service members.

This is part of the administration’s larger effort to erase the LGBTQ+ community and any related data, history, resources, services, and programs. Kayla Williams — a veteran, former VA Assistant Secretary, and current VP of Policy & Programs at our partner Out In National Security — explains why this data erasure is especially concerning when it comes to sexual assault in the military.

Tomorrow our Executive Director, Kara Corcoran, embarks on the Leadville 100 Trail Run in Colorado. Leading up to this, she raised $100 per mile for SPARTA Pride ($10,000)! Since we met this goal, we also received a $10,000 match from a generous donor. Don’t believe the lies, myths, and misinformation. Transgender service members have been deploying successfully for the past decade, including in austere environments and on combat missions.

As SecDef’s new testosterone announcement shows, hormone medication can be prefilled in advance to take downrange and doesn’t impact readiness or lethality. Studies continuously prove it. And SPARTA Pride’s members are living proof.

As our Executive Director Kara Corcoran awaits her forced separation from the Army, she's embarking on a challenge of her choosing: running the legendary Leadville Trail 100 Run in Colorado on August 22. And she’s doing it to raise money for the trans military community here at SPARTA Pride.
