Today, SPARTA Pride commemorates the 251st birthday of the Army: the oldest and largest service branch in the US military, tracing its roots to the Continental Army established in 1775. We are proud of the large number of soldiers in our community who have served and continue to serve in the Army.

Yesterday our Comms Director, Emily, sat down with Pride365 Radio to record an interview that airs today. Tune in from 10am-2pm ET, when the segment will be spread out throughout other programming. You can find it at pride365radio.org or any audio streaming service!

She spoke with Capital Pride’s Tiffany Royster about what SPARTA Pride does, why it’s important to celebrate Pride in the military & veteran community (especially in DC), and why everyone should come to our event in DC on the 19th. See our recent posts for details on our Military & Veteran Pride event for Capital Pride on June 19 and our parade marching group on June 20!

“When D.C. fails, California delivers,” said Assemblymember Chris Ward Assemblymember Chris Ward in a press conference yesterday in San Diego, where our executive director also spoke. “These brave service members are being discharged not because of their performance or commitment, but because they are being targeted by discriminatory, arbitrary federal policies,” Ward continued. “California has a responsibility to ensure they are not left without housing, employment opportunities, or access to the services they need to rebuild their lives. I am grateful for the Assembly’s passage of AB 1775 and look forward to its passage in the Senate.”

California AB 1775 responds to the growing crisis facing transgender service members being forced out of military service under the Trump Administration’s Executive Order 14183, often with little notice, limited guidance, and inadequate transition support. Many of those affected already live in California or are expected to return to the state following separation from service.

The bill includes $2 million to support the implementation of these critical services, a significant step toward ensuring California is prepared to assist those impacted by the federal government’s discriminatory actions. It is imperative that the state Senate and Governor Gavin Newsom preserve that funding in the final state budget.

This is not a partisan issue. This is an American issue. It is about taking care of our service members, veterans, and their families.

We want to thank our partners Out In National Security for their leadership and for providing the expertise and support that helped make this legislation possible. Their work has helped pave the way for our community and for policies that support those affected by these challenges.

And to Assemblymember Ward and his team: thank you for being the kind of hero our community needs. Your commitment to supporting service members, veterans, and their families reflects the very best of public service. California is setting an example for the nation, and we hope other states will follow its lead in standing up for those who have served.

"...supportive legislation like AB 1775 matters.

This bill recognizes that transition out of military service is not only about separation paperwork or employment pathways. It is also about making sure people have the support systems needed to move forward with dignity.

And when that transition is forced, sudden, and tied to discrimination, the stakes around employment, healthcare, and professional licensing could not be higher.

Housing support is a particularly important part of the conversation.

MVA operates Q'mmunity House in Seattle, Washington - the first LGBTQ+ veteran transitional housing program of its kind in the country. What we have learned since opening is simple: housing changes outcomes.

When unhoused and at-risk veterans have safe and stable housing paired with community, case management, and supportive services, they are more likely to maintain employment, improve their health, reconnect with purpose, and transition successfully into permanent housing.

We have seen veterans move from crisis to stability and independence because someone invested in building a bridge rather than expecting them to navigate these systems alone."

Challenge accepted! A generous donor has offered $2,500 to SPARTA Pride, but only as a match if we reach that amount on our Give Out Day campaign. We're at $1,600 and need your help to get the match! Donate now: giveoutday.org/spartapride. Donations support our emergency grant program for trans service members and veterans in need.

While Give Out Day was yesterday, the campaign will be open until June 30. We are truly grateful to those who have supported us so far!

Today is Give Out Day, the only national day of giving for LGBTQ+ nonprofits. SPARTA Pride needs your support now, and every dollar helps: giveoutday.org/spartapride

All proceeds will go directly to our Jess Shipps Emergency Relief Fund, providing vital microgrants to transgender service members, veterans, and families who have recently been separated from military service under the ban.

This Pride Month, please consider supporting members of our LGBTQ+ community—especially transgender service members and veterans who served honorably, sacrificed for this nation, and are now facing unemployment, housing instability, food insecurity, and the loss of critical support networks. Many are being forced to relocate from states where they no longer feel safe or able to live openly and authentically.

This is not how we should treat those who volunteered to serve our country.

Your donation provides direct assistance to service members and veterans facing emergency needs, helping them secure housing, put food on the table, relocate to safer communities, and rebuild their lives during an incredibly difficult transition.

Because of supporters like you, SPARTA Pride has already distributed more than $20,000 in emergency relief grants this year alone.

If you have ever wanted to make a tangible difference in someone's life, today is the day.

Please donate, share, and help us continue supporting those who answered the call to serve.
