Almost twenty years ago, Nick and I bought a 16 acre piece of land in the Shenandoah Valley. It was covered in nothing but pine trees and a few patches of scrub. We built it into Green Fence Farm, a fully equipped multiproduct sustainable farm and homestead at one point supporting a CSA of over a hundred families, two thriving farmers market stands, and restaurant sales from Staunton VA to DC; breeding cashmere goat and Icelandic sheep herds; fiber and meat rabbits; poultry of all sorts, egg-laying and meat; two orchards; and an acre of raised bed for fruit and vegetables. You can read more about all that in the listing as the farm is being offered up as a turnkey operation—tractor, tools, and all—which could be up and running to catch the end of this growing season.
In the last few years, we’ve concentrated on the HOME side of the homestead. Everything on the farm has been designed and built by us (except the marvelous entertaining deck designed and built by our son-in-law, a gifted designer), but the living spaces are where we put our hearts and souls. They are quirky and striking and perfect for the big gatherings we loved to host here. They are our dream house (or houses, given the number of outbuildings) . As I look at these fantastic pictures by , I realize we made some art here, something unique and beautiful and alive.
And by “we” I mean Nick, mostly. It was mostly his vision—from the wood everywhere to the four water features to the stain glass creations everywhere to the custom cabinetry. It was mostly his work to put it all together and keep it running. And it was (mostly) his decision to let it go—to let it become another family’s dream.
We love this place and have loved living here and are so proud and excited to think about the joy it might bring to the next owners. There are only good memories waiting here for you.
