Last week we discovered multiple hidden gems in North Dakota—accessible only by gravel road. This one is in Jud, and combines two of my favorite things: veterans and dogs!!

Service Dogs for America is accredited by Assistance Dogs International and is the only accredited service dog organization in North Dakota, serving clients from nearly every state across the country. They train dogs for mobility assistance, emergency medical response, and PTSD, and about 60% of their clients are veterans.

Their impact also extends to three North Dakota correctional facilities through inmate canine assistance programs, where participants help with the training process and prepare these dogs for a life of service.

This is pretty remarkable work that has nationwide impact, happening right here in Jud. Thank you to the Service Dogs for America team for showing us the incredible work you do every day!

What a special visit to the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon!

So many of the veterans I visit with describe this place as “paradise,” and it’s easy to see why. North Dakota is doing so much right when it comes to caring for our veterans, while always looking for ways we can do even more.

It is incredibly moving to sit down with these men and women, hear their stories, and learn about the sacrifices they made in service to our country. They are exactly the people we work to honor and support every day.

Thank you to Dane, Susie, and the entire team for the warm welcome and hospitality, for showing me around, and for giving me the opportunity to have lunch and visit with so many veterans.

And I have to mention the woodshop on campus—what a great space! Hoping to partner with them on producing some North Dakota treasures I can share with dignitaries and others on behalf of our great state.

Such a wonderful visit. Thank you to everyone at the North Dakota Veterans Home for welcoming me!

Welcoming U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to North Dakota today as part of her “Back to the States” tour was a privilege!

At Bismarck State College, we saw how education, workforce training, and strong industry partnerships are preparing students for good-paying careers while meeting the needs of North Dakota employers.

Then we did something you don’t see in Washington, D.C… a trip down a gravel road to Sweet Briar School. Students and educators demonstrated what makes rural education in North Dakota so special: close-knit communities, dedicated teachers, local leadership, and an unwavering commitment to helping every student succeed.

It was also wonderful to see old friends Brian Kalk, Kirsten Baesler, and Levi Bachmeier during the visit. Each of them has made a tremendous contribution to education and public service in North Dakota.

Bismarck State College and Sweet Briar School may look very different, but they share the same commitment to innovation, opportunity, and putting students first. North Dakota has an outstanding story to tell about what education can accomplish when decisions are made closer to students, families, and communities.

Secretary McMahon’s commitment to ensuring education decisions are made as close to the classroom as possible was on display and our North Dakota schools demonstrate just how successful this approach is! ✏️📚🎓

A healthier America begins with healthy land, a strong food system, thriving families, and resilient rural communities. North Dakota’s farmers and ranchers are leading the way.

Today, I joined producers and conservation leaders for the Advancing Soil Health for a Healthy America Summit at Black Leg Ranch. Since the Doan family first homesteaded this land in 1882, Black Leg Ranch has evolved into a nationally recognized example of regenerative agriculture. Through holistic management, rotational grazing, livestock-water infrastructure, and voluntary conservation partnerships, the ranch is improving its native grasslands, wildlife habitat, and water quality while raising cattle and bison.

Thank you to Jerry and Renae Doan and everyone who shared their experiences today. The best agricultural policies recognize that producers know their land best and support voluntary, locally led innovation—not one-size-fits-all mandates.

There was no better way to finish the conversation than enjoying a delicious Black Leg Ranch bison burger and homemade German potato salad. 😋
