It believe that this is a transformational season for Mills College as it takes a fresh look at how it provides a 21st Century education in new and relevant disciplines, while supported by its traditional ideals of rigorous student learning and development. The liaison position between both Boards, as Alumna Trustee, aids understanding and support of important College challenges and decisions. Some examples are, the move to an innovative First Year Experience under the MPOWER initiative that provides academic support to and mentoring throughout a student's academic career; the opportunities for meaningful career preparation through internships with nonprofit organizations and businesses under the mantle of the Community Engaged Learning program; the new online graduate degree program; and, the Mills-Oakland Promise, wherein Mills has pledged to educate young women who may not otherwise have access to a top-tier college education. These transformative collaborations greatly enlarge student learning and the opportunity for success in the post-college world. I believe they are necessary for Mills to effectively recruit and retain students, and to realize its short-term and-long-term goals that benefit the entire Mills College community. This is what's on my mind.
