Portugal decriminalized drug use in 2000, and addiction has been cut in half. The country's approach to drug policy is the exact opposite of the US: they treats addicts as people suffering from a disease rather than criminals who should to be punished. Over the past decade, Portugal has doubled spending on treatment and prevention rather than on police and jails. The government also provides addicts with the help they need including free needle exchanges, free rehab programs, and transition back to a healthy life. Share if the US should follow Portugal's example.
