(NAFJ) Beverly Farris is one of the National Program Managers who lives in Washington State. It is the vision of the National Alliance of Faith and Justice that the criminal justice system will work harmoniously with communities of faith and service and with applicable stakeholders to improve equitable administration and respect for law and order. In 2000, the National Alliance of Faith and Justi

ce, www.nafj.org, invited the nation for its first year to join in extending the holiday and service weekend beginning on the Sabbath and continuing through the formal national observance of Justice Sunday, observed on the day before the federal holiday. The observance was so named in the honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his vocation as a faith leader and drum major for justice. The word "justice" appears in many of the most cherished documents of the United States to include the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Pledge of Allegiance. Each year, NAFJ, municipal, faith, and national partners like the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ) continue the tradition of the commemorative weekend to honor the diverse armies of faith, justice, and compassion of all ages, past and present, whose sacrifices continue to illuminate the human spirit and dignity.

Congratulations to our very own FCPS student Heman Bekele who has been named TIME magazine's Scientist!! Last October, Heman, a rising 10th-grader at Woodson High School, was the winner of its Young Scientist Challenge. His prize: $25,000. His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and even prevent multiple forms of skin cancer. It may take years before such a product comes to market, but this summer Heman is already spending part of every weekday working in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, hoping to bring his dream to fruition. When school is in session, he’ll be there less often, but will continue to plug away. “I’m really passionate about skin-cancer research,” he says, “whether it’s my own research or what’s happening in the field. It’s absolutely incredible to think that one day my bar of soap will be able to make a direct impact on somebody else’s life. That’s the reason I started this all in the first place.”
