Gloria Steinem was an American icon.
When I was a congressional intern in college, the women’s rights movement was transforming our country, and Gloria was one of its most powerful and influential voices. At a time when women were demanding a greater voice in our government, our workplaces, and our society, Gloria inspired generations of women to show up, speak up, and take an active role in shaping our country.
Gloria was a fighter and an activist throughout her life. Through her groundbreaking journalism, fearless advocacy, and unwavering commitment to equality, she challenged the status quo, broke down barriers, and helped forge a better future for generations of women. She fought for reproductive freedom, equality in the workplace, and a movement that recognized and elevated the voices and experiences of women from all backgrounds.
Her true impact cannot be measured simply by the progress she helped achieve. It lives in the generations of women who found their voices, claimed their place at the table, stepped forward to lead, and continued the fight for equality.
I am deeply grateful for the example Gloria set and the path she helped pave for so many. She changed our country for the better, and while we have lost a fearless fighter for women and equality, the movement she helped build and the generations she inspired will carry her work forward.
Gloria Steinem leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, and her courage, conviction, and determination will continue to inspire generations to come.
