Family caregivers are at the center of nearly every healthcare journey, yet their voices are too often missing from the policies that shape healthcare access, affordability, and innovation.

Join the National Alliance for Caregiving as we launch our new Healthcare Access, Affordability & Innovation Policy Agenda and kick off a series of educational opportunities exploring how policy can better support family caregivers—both as essential care partners and as current and future patients.

Our first session, hosted in partnership with the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM), will focus on the Alzheimer's Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act, bipartisan legislation that would expand Medicare coverage for FDA-authorized early detection screening tests for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, including blood-based biomarker tests. Today, fewer than 1 in 10 people with Alzheimer's are diagnosed at the earliest stage, when treatment is possible—and 17% of family caregivers aren't sure whether their loved one has a memory issue at all.

Learn why earlier detection matters, not only for individuals living with dementia, but also for the family caregivers who benefit from more time to understand a diagnosis, participate in care decisions, plan for future needs, and connect with resources and supports.

🚨 ONE DAY LEFT | Family caregivers, your voice matters in Medicare policy.

The National Alliance for Caregiving and Caregiver Nation Coalition are calling on organizations to sign onto a public comment letter responding to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) proposed CY2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS).

This year's proposal could shape how family caregivers are recognized and supported through Medicare — including community-based palliative care, care management, advance care planning, and dementia care. It could also weaken Caregiver Training Services by folding them into other billing codes — reducing the distinct support family caregivers currently rely on to learn hands-on care skills.

We're asking CMS to:

➡️ Preserve and strengthen Caregiver Training Services (CTS) — don't fold them into other billing codes
➡️ Build community-based palliative care around the real needs of individuals and their family caregivers, not just terminal prognosis
➡️ Recognize family caregiver strain and preparedness as part of care planning

Family caregivers are asked to do things most of us never expect to learn. Changing a port. Managing complicated medication schedules. Caring for a feeding tube. Performing wound care. Operating medical equipment at home.

For many caregivers, the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling confident comes down to one thing: training.

We're collecting stories from family caregivers who received health or care professional training to provide specific medical care for a family member, and what that training meant to them.

Maybe a nurse showed you how to do wound care before a hospital discharge. Maybe a home health aide walked you through medication management. Maybe you learned tracheostomy care, tube feeding, or safe lifting and transfers through a video, a hands-on demonstration, or written instructions.

However you learned, we want to know:

🔵 How did it affect your confidence or reduce your stress?
🔵 What difference did it make for you and your family?

Did you know Gloria Steinem became a family caregiver at age 10?

As we mourn her passing, we remember not only the movement she helped to build but the child she was: a young girl in Toledo who spent seven years caring for her mother through severe mental illness, running the household, cooking meals, and managing adult crises while still a child herself. She later said those years instilled a lifelong sense of responsibility to others.

Today, more than 4 million young people are doing that same work, hidden in plain sight.

Steinem's story reminds us that care is not isolated. It is the connective tissue of our communities, shaping how we show up for one another across a lifetime. She understood that progress depends on how we sustain each other, and she used her torch to light thousands more.

At the National Alliance for Caregiving, we carry that work forward so no one has to care alone.

There's a workforce this country depends on and refuses to count. This , we're naming it: family caregivers.

Millions of family caregivers are also part of the American workforce — juggling both, often quietly. According to our Caregiving in the US 2025 report, seven in ten working-age caregivers are employed, and half experience real impacts on the job just to provide care.

The financial strain is real:

🔷 22% have taken on more debt
🔷 31% have drained their short-term savings
🔷 19% have fallen behind on bills
🔷 Less than half feel comfortable telling their supervisor they're a caregiver at all

This , we're recognizing the caregivers doing double duty — at the office, in the field, on the front lines, and at home. Caregiving is labor.

It's time our workplaces treated it that way.

Family caregivers play a vital role in supporting individuals living with cancer, yet many healthcare organizations continue to face challenges in effectively integrating caregiver support into routine care. As recognition of caregivers' contributions grows, so does the need for practical strategies that translate evidence into sustainable programs and practice.

Join Allison J. Applebaum, Ph.D., FAPOS, Director of the Steven S. Elbaum Family Center for Caregiving, and J. Nicholas Odom, PhD, RN, University of Alabama at Birmingham, for a discussion of the INcreasing Caregiver Support Implementation through Training and Education (INCITE) Training Program, a national initiative designed to help cancer center teams strengthen their capacity to implement evidence-informed caregiver support practices. Through training, technical assistance, and organizational change strategies, INCITE aims to advance the integration of family caregiver support into routine cancer care.

During this webinar, speakers will share early findings from the INCITE Training Program and discuss insights from participating cancer centers. The conversation will explore implementation successes and challenges, lessons learned, and promising opportunities for embedding caregiver support more effectively within cancer care delivery. Participants will gain practical insights into how healthcare organizations can move from recognizing the importance of family caregivers to building sustainable systems that support them.

Where did all the workers go? The answer: caregiving.

In a letter to The Washington Post, the National Alliance for Caregiving's President and CEO, Jason Resendez, responded to a recent article asking why thousands of workers have disappeared from the labor force — and pointed out a piece of the story that's too often missed.

More than 35 million Americans are now balancing caregiving with work, according to our Caregiving in the U.S. 2025 report, produced with AARP. And a KPMG analysis of Federal Reserve data found that in 2025, 4.6 million prime-age adults weren't working because they were caring for an elderly, disabled, or sick adult. Elder care alone kept roughly 2 million men out of paid work.

From Jason's letter:

"Despite having the National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers, the country has yet to invest seriously in care infrastructure like paid family leave, in-home care through the Medicare program, home- and community-based services and child care. For now, these numbers are an early warning."

As the population ages, this will only grow. If policymakers and employers want to know where the workers went, they need to start looking at who those workers are caring for.

A person who provides unpaid support to a parent, spouse, child, or family member managing an illness, disability, or the realities of aging. Often untrained. Frequently unseen.

Right now, that's 63 million Americans. A jump of 20 million in ten years. Nearly 1 in 4 adults, quietly managing medications, missed work, and someone else's whole life alongside their own. And still, the policies haven't moved fast enough to match the need.

Dolly Parton spent her life taking care of others — her fans, her community, everyone lucky enough to cross her path. It only feels right that in her passing, we talk about taking care of her.

Dolly shared that after caring for her husband Carl through his illness, she "let a lot of things go" when it came to her own health. It was a small, honest admission from someone who rarely let us see her struggle. And it's one that resonated deeply with caregivers everywhere, because so many of us have lived it.

Our President & CEO, Jason Resendez, reflected on this with CNN:

"The data shows this is happening in millions of homes across America. Caregivers' health is worn down by the labor of care. Even with her privilege, Dolly is not an exception."

Our Caregiving in the U.S. 2025 report shows just how common this is — nearly two-thirds of caregivers report emotional stress, 45% report physical strain, and only 15% say a healthcare provider has ever asked what THEY need. CNN drew on these findings to help explain why Dolly's experience reflects something so many families are quietly going through.
