The place is a nature reserve in the south of Sweden with an area of one square kilometer. The Swedish artist Lars Vilks started to build a construction, “Nimis”, on this spot in 1980. It became massive, and in 1982 it also became a matter for the Country Administration Board, the police and the courts. It was built as a work of art with no permission. The trials (since 1982 approximately one tria

l every year) brought the work a lot of publicity. The artist was quite successful, and the authorities were not able to have the pieces removed as he sold them, first to Joseph Beuys and, after Beuys’s death, to Christo. In the nineties, two other pieces were erected in concrete: Arx and Omfalos. As the area was more or less permanently occupied, the artist proclaimed a new country, Ladonia. Ladonia became an area that couldn’t be controlled by Swedish authorities. Vilks acted as Chancellor of Ladonia until 1997, when the number of registered citizens exceeded one thousand. At this point, elections were held via the Internet. Ladonia became a remony, a republican monarchy with a president and a queen. The president is elected tri-annually, while the queen is queen for life (or by choice) and succession shall be matrilineal. The winner of the first Ladonian election was Fernando Rodrigues (Brazil), and because there was no current reigning monarch, Ywonne I Jarl was proclaimed Queen of Ladonia. The Queen and the President are part of the Cabinet together with a number of ministers. Vilks became the State Secretary and served in that position until his death in October 2021. In June 2011, with the throne recently vacated, the Cabinet selected the second Ladonian Queen from the current set of Ministers. Queen Carolyn I was proclaimed on the National Day and was crowned at Nimis the following September.

Ladonian Passport Entry Stamps (Nimis)

If you’ve visited Nimis and wondered why no one stamped your passport, rest assured: this is *entirely* consistent with Ladonian border practice. The right to be idle is enshrined in our constitution, and border guards cannot be compelled to appear on demand.

To address this longstanding administrative gap, we’ve introduced official Ladonian Passport Entry Stamp stickers for visits to Nimis. These may be issued with an official date of entry or departure — including retroactive dates — or left unissued by request.

For many visitors, this serves as the first formal record of a passage made years (or decades) ago.

Available now via the Ladonia website for $1.50 each. Shipping is a flat $2.50, regardless of how many stamp stickers are issued.

Ladonia acknowledges the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City State.

As a global figure, Pope Francis was known for his focus on compassion, dialogue, and social justice. His leadership influenced not only Catholics, including some Ladonians, but also many who respected his calls for dignity, peace, and care for the planet.

We extend condolences to the Catholic community and to all those who were impacted by his work and legacy.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.

🎩 Happy Stealing Day, Ladonians! 🎩

On December 26, we celebrate one of Ladonia’s most mischievous and imaginative traditions—Stealing Day! ✨

But fear not, fellow citizens, for in Ladonia, “stealing” is not about taking but about repurposing, reinventing, and reimagining the world around us. From turning forgotten timbers into works of art to building a nation from creativity and defiance, Stealing Day reminds us to see the value in what others overlook.

🪵 How to Celebrate Stealing Day:

Reclaim and reuse something old or forgotten.

Create something new from found objects.

Share your “stolen” (repurposed) creations with us in the comments below!

Remember: you’re not stealing it, you’re liberating it. You’re a freedom fighter for creativity and reinvention! 🌟

Let this day inspire you to embrace the unconventional and see opportunity where others see chaos. Long live Ladonia, and long live the spirit of Stealing Day!
