The Rotary Club of Washington, DC is a volunteer organization for professional men and women. Our club conducts a lunch each week with a keynote speaker.

The Rotary Club of Washington, DC was founded as the 46th club of Rotary International. Our speakers have included Supreme Court Justices, high-ranking military officials, former Cabinet Secretaries, ambassadors and more. All Rotary Clubs operate under the same four ideas called The Four-Way Test. Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Yesterday, the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. hosted our monthly Happy Hour! 🍸✨

A heartfelt thank you to all of our esteemed members, visiting Rotarians, and guests who joined us and brought such great energy, conversations, and connections to the evening.

Our Happy Hours are more than just a chance to unwind. They give members and guests an opportunity to connect outside of our weekly meetings, strengthen friendships, welcome new faces, exchange ideas, and build the relationships that make service and collaboration possible.

🎤 TOMORROW’S WEEKLY SPEAKER | ANGELA JONES

The Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. is pleased to welcome Angela Jones, Executive Director of Youth Guidance DC, as our featured speaker tomorrow!

Angela is an accomplished nonprofit and community leader with more than 15 years of experience advancing strategic initiatives, organizational development, fundraising, partnerships, and social impact throughout the National Capital Area.

In her role with Youth Guidance DC, Angela leads efforts to amplify youth-centered programming focused on wellness, positive youth development, and post-secondary success. Her career has been dedicated to strengthening communities, cultivating meaningful partnerships, and creating opportunities that help young people thrive.

Angela also serves on the DC Collaborative Executive Board and is a member of Leadership Greater Washington and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She holds a B.S. in Business Management from Oral Roberts University and an M.Div. from Howard University School of Divinity.

🎒 Creating Lasting Impact in Washington, D.C.!

Immediate Past President Donnie Shaw joined nonprofit organization Third Pillar to pack school supplies and distribute 1,100 backpacks to elementary and high school students across Washington, D.C.

Through hands-on service and meaningful community partnerships, we’re helping local students begin the school year prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.

Join us this Wednesday for another Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. luncheon as we welcome Derrick Terry for a special presentation, “Opening Doors to a Brighter Future.” 🌟

Derrick is a two-time author, podcast host, educator, military veteran, information management professional, and longtime community leader with more than 20 years of experience in education and public service.

A 28-year military reservist and war veteran, Derrick has served in Guatemala, Qatar, and Afghanistan. His dedication to service continues here at home through education, special education advocacy, and his work with the Light The Way Foundation, helping expand youth enrichment programs, film camps, and scholarships.

We look forward to hearing Derrick’s story and learning more about how education, leadership, and community engagement can create opportunities and open doors for the next generation.

🎬🌟 Celebrating the next generation of storytellers!

The Rotary Club of Washington, DC was proud to support and attend the red-carpet premiere of Destination Union Station, an original documentary created by talented young filmmakers ages 9–12 through the Light the Way Foundation Film Summer Camp.

Through a $20,000 grant from the Rotary Foundation of Washington, DC, Light the Way Foundation was able to expand its filmmaking camp, giving more young people the opportunity to explore storytelling, creativity, teamwork, and the art of bringing an idea to life on the big screen.

Seeing these young filmmakers walk the red carpet and celebrate their work at the AFI Silver Theatre was a wonderful reminder of what can happen when a community invests in its youth. We were also honored to see The Rotary Club of Washington, DC recognized among the event’s sponsors and supporters.

Congratulations to the young filmmakers, their families, mentors, and the entire Light the Way Foundation team on this special milestone. We are proud to play a small part in helping young voices dream bigger, create boldly, and tell their stories. 🎥✨

What an incredible luncheon we had this past Wednesday! 🇦🇲🇺🇸🌎

The Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. was honored to welcome His Excellency Narek Mkrtchyan, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the United States, for a fascinating conversation on Armenia’s history, its evolving role in the modern world, and the importance of diplomacy in navigating today’s changing international landscape.

Drawing from his background as both a historian and public servant, Ambassador Mkrtchyan shared insights into Armenia’s ancient roots, the modern challenges facing the country, and how Armenia is adapting its policies and preparing for the future. He also emphasized Armenia’s commitment to building positive relationships and cooperation with nations around the world.

It was a wonderful reminder of the power of dialogue, diplomacy, and international understanding, values that remain deeply connected to Rotary’s mission of promoting goodwill and peace across borders. 🌍🤝

What an incredibly productive luncheon we had this past Wednesday.

Our meeting was made even more special as we welcomed visiting Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tokyo and participated in a meaningful flag exchange, celebrating the international friendships and global connections that make Rotary such a unique organization. Moments like these remind us that while we may serve in different communities around the world, we are united by a shared commitment to Service Above Self.

We were also honored to hear from Dr. Rachel Marcus, who delivered an eye-opening presentation on Chagas disease in the DC Metro Area and across the United States.

Dr. Marcus shared the startling reality that an estimated 300,000 people in the United States are living with Chagas disease, including approximately 18,000 individuals in the DC Metro area. Many remain undiagnosed, despite the disease’s potential to cause serious heart complications, stroke, and other life-threatening conditions.

She also highlighted the incredible work of LASOCHA (Latin American Society of Chagas), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free testing, treatment, education, and cardiac care to at-risk communities. Her presentation served as a powerful reminder of the importance of awareness, early detection, and access to healthcare in improving outcomes and saving lives.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Marcus for sharing her expertise, to our friends from the Rotary Club of Tokyo for visiting and exchanging flags with us, and to all our members and guests who joined us for another engaging and impactful Rotary luncheon.

This past Wednesday, the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. had the pleasure of welcoming Director Lamont Carey, Director of the DC Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs, as our featured speaker.

Director Carey shared how lasting change begins with investing in people, highlighting the challenges many youth in underserved communities face, including access to basic necessities like daily meals. He also emphasized that his office is always open and available to support residents, nonprofits, and community organizations working to make a difference.

The discussion also sparked exciting ideas for future Community Service Grant projects, and Director Carey expressed his sincere appreciation for the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C.’s continued commitment to supporting local nonprofits through our annual grants program.

🕊️ Building Peace Through Community Action 🕊️

The Rotary Club of Washington, D.C.’s Peace Initiative Committee (DCPIC), led by Chairman Kenneth E. Barnes, Sr., proudly supported the inaugural Time4us2getinvolved Community Day at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

This impactful event brought together community leaders, families, friends, and neighbors for a day focused on unity, engagement, and peace. Attendees enjoyed live performances, panel discussions, youth speakers, local vendors, giveaways, and great food—including a special appearance by Kamal Ali of Ben’s Chili Bowl.

Chairman Barnes was joined by DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb, Past President Donnie Shaw, and Past President William “Bill” Dent as they demonstrated Rotary’s commitment to creating lasting impact through service and collaboration.

Events like these reflect Rotary’s dedication to promoting Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention—one of Rotary International’s Areas of Focus—and our belief that stronger communities are built when people come together for a common purpose.

Together, we are uniting for good and creating a more peaceful future for our communities.
