Earlier this year, National Civic Art Society president Justin Shubow delivered a talk on Sir Roger Scruton's philosophy of architecture at Georgetown University. A staunch foe of Modernism, Scruton, who died in 2020, argued for the superiority of the classical tradition, which he believed to be unparalleled in its capacity to produce beauty and harmony, and to make us feel at home in the world. Washington is full of classical buildings. We may see more of them in the not too distant future. Watch this interview with Justin Shubow, whom I have met a couple times. I am generally sympathetic to his views on architecture.

"What are we to make of contemporary Christian nationalists, in America and abroad? . . . I get the impression that the term emerged as an epithet used by the movement’s – if we can call it that – enemies. Like many epithets throughout history, it has been at least partially embraced by those to whom it was applied. Perhaps the Christian nationalist title now is claimed by some angry marginal people because respectable people do not want it anymore. If so, that is a tragic development."

What are we to make of contemporary Christian nationalists? How many people have earned the title, or claim it? How long have these people or the term been around?
