The Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project (MAIP) is dedicated to correcting and preventing the conviction of innocent people in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

The Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project (MAIP) is a life-saving resource for many residents of the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland. MAIP fights injustice by bringing free, comprehensive legal assistance to regional residents facing wrongful convictions and incarceration. To create a brighter, more just future for our region, MAIP directly engages our legal, judicial, and law enforcement le

aders to educate them and the public of the problems that can lead to these wrongful convictions and incarcerations. To date, MAIP has secured the exoneration or release of 44 innocent men. These men spent a total of more than 889 years in prison—lost years with their children and families, and as active members of their communities—a massive injury to justice. Every year MAIP receives hundreds of requests for assistance - hundreds of people hoping for another shot at proving their innocence and reclaiming their lives.

In 2025, MAIP received 353 requests, 282 of which were moved into our initial screening process. 282 people searching for help in proving their innocence. 282 families hoping their loved one would find a way home.

“They are always there, they are always giving love and wanting love. It is unconditional. They are great companions,” says Troy Burner, exonerated in March 2020 after 24 years in prison. His two dogs, Gucci and Juno, are a constant comforting presence.

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute tells us that pets provide a sense of safety, increased feelings of love, lowered anxiety, and reduced depression. After years spent unjustly confined to a prison cell, love and safety are two critical comforts.

On National Dog Day, we honor the resilience of our exonerees and the unconditional love from our pups.

It is a common misconception that criminal justice reform leads to an increase in crime. Research supports the opposite - many cities and counties nationally have used tested, data-driven reform strategies that reduce the misuse and overuse of jails without jeopardizing safety.

Fiction: Fingerprint evidence is foolproof.

While it may seem like fingerprints provide foolproof evidence, fingerprints left at a crime scene can be smudged or incomplete. Judge Kozinski notes in his article that when tested by rigorous scientific methods, fingerprint examiners have a significant error rate.
