ቡሄ 𝗕𝘂𝗵𝗲 (𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿) 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗮
𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿, also known as Buhe (ቡሄ), is an important annual Ethiopian Orthodox celebration commemorating the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor, witnessed by Peter, James and John. It is celebrated every year on 13 Nehase, August 19.
In Lalibela, the celebration is a beautiful combination of faith, tradition and community life. On the eve of the festival, young people go from house to house singing “Hoya Hoye” and making traditional whip sounds, while families prepare the special mulmul bread to share with them. In the evening, people gather around a traditional bonfire (chibo), symbolizing the divine light revealed on Mount Tabor.
