“I had an interest in being in the military from a very young age. My dad had served in Vietnam—I could see how being in the Army had shaped who he was, and I could always sense his great pride in the military. Dad had left the Army after Vietnam—but, when I was about a year old, he joined the Ohio National Guard to make some extra money during a period where his factory was on strike. For the rest of my childhood, I would watch him put on his uniform every month to go to drill—and my siblings and I would also go to the armory to watch his unit’s convoy arrive back from the annual two-week training they would do every summer in Michigan. Seeing these things from a young age had me hooked on joining the military. In addition to that, I was a kid of the 80’s so a lot of movies and pop culture revolved around patriotism and coverage of the Cold War. Finally, I can honestly say I didn’t really have a good concept for how to pursue any other profession—most people I knew worked blue-collared jobs and did not go to college, so becoming an engineer or a businessman seemed like abstract goals that I really had no model or plan for how to achieve at that time …
During my time at West Point, I toyed with the idea of exploring different branches of the military and different career paths—but Aviation was ultimately what I had always dreamed of pursuing. Getting commissioned as an Aviation officer upon graduation was truly a dream come true …
I loved learning to fly. For as much as I struggled as a Cadet, things started to click for me once I was an officer and away from West Point. Initially, I had some trouble with learning to fly instruments (as many people do)—but I immersed myself in the academics and found that my ability to memorize things served me well. I had come to flight school with an open mind regarding what aircraft I wanted to fly, but I quickly discovered that flying Apaches was what I wanted to pursue.”

Congratulations to Milena Clark for winning the 1st Annual Paul & Becky Berger TALP Scholarship! Her essay “A Soldier’s Parting Words” stood out from among the 139 applicants:

“…I remember asking my father one day, why he decided to fight for a country that seemingly will not fight for him as a black man. He told me that he stills holds the original values and ideals that our founding fathers. That while we need to pay attention to the current of America, we also need to focus on her future. He left me with these parting words, ‘People around the world will take our freedom, we need to rally around the values we hold as Americans, regardless of our skin color.’

the one thing that holds us all together as a country is our desire to uphold the original teachings of our founding fathers, that we can become the country that can provide freedom for the next generations that follow.”

Thank you to Paul R Berger , Becky Berger, Madison Morrisand for sponsoring the scholarship!

The American Legacy Project is committed to helping others understand their past through conversation. The tragic events occurring in Afghanistan have forced countless service members, veterans, and their families to relive past events and experiences that make up the 20-year conflict. We realize it is a very difficult time for many service members, especially those who left a part of themselves or someone else behind as they served this nation.

At The American Legacy Project we are ready to listen to all who are struggling. If you know someone who is struggling or in need of assistance, there are many resources available including the Military Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255) and the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255) that can help. Please check on your battle buddies, family members, and your friends. We will overcome this together!

“When I left the Army I didn’t realize how much I had to resolve and think through. I didn’t realize how much I needed to start that process of introspection and just figure out what was in my head. The American Legacy Project helped me start this process and really finalize the mental transition without losing the things the Army taught me.” - Max Cormier, Captain, US Army
