ANC Update!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m officially 3+ months into my role as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and what a roller coaster it has been! I can’t lie y’all, it hasn’t been easy. I’ve shed some tears! I wasn’t prepared for some of the challenges I’ve faced so far, but I’m proud of myself for continuing to push myself and figuring out how to continue to serve my neighborhood despite some obstacles 💪🏾 Here’s a little more on what I’ve been up to:
✨
Two days into the job, I was elected Commission Chair by my fellow commissioners! That means I am the Chair of Commission 8E, which includes commissioners 8E01-8E07. Long story short, I run the meetings and field a ton of emails!
✨
Being the Chair has not come without challenges. One of my fellow commissioners is NOT a fan 😂 first time in my life I’ve experienced this level of sexism and misogyny. But as my Pastor has reminded me many times, excellence exposes mediocrity, and the price of favor is opposition! I will stay strong and continue to push forward.
✨
Unfortunately human nature means we tend to elevate the negative over the positive so I’ve probably been a little too focused on the hard parts. The truth is I’ve received so much amazing feedback from the community about how happy they are to see new energy and how much they appreciation what I’m doing. That’s what matters most!
✨
The community work so far has been all about escalating issues my neighbors have been facing like trash, utilities, etc. Another huge and important piece of the work has been around zoning. There are so many new developments coming to my area and folks looking to build up around here. While ANCs can’t approve/deny building permits and such, our voices are important and I’ve been very vocal about new development here. We must be involved in what happens in our neighborhood!
✨
Okay this post has already been way too long! More to come very soon, including some videos and maybe even a vlog 😊️
