On Nov. 23, 2011, President Barack Obama signed into law the legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the Montford Point Marines. This award recognizes Montford Point Marines' contributions to the Marine Corps and the United States of America from 1942 to 1949, during a time of hardship and segregation. Another Historic Day at the Tubman Museum and for the Legacy of the Montford Point Marines.

NMPMA Chapter 35 and Auxiliary members had the distinct honor and privilege of presenting the Congressional Gold Medal to the family of Private First Class Herbert Petty, an Original Montford Point Marine whose service and sacrifice helped pave the way for future generations of Marines.

The ceremony was held at the Tubman Museum, where family members, friends, supporters, and Chapter members gathered to celebrate and preserve the legacy of one of America's pioneering African American Marines.

The keynote speaker for the occasion was Mr. Charles Rutland, Jr., President of the Chapter 35 Auxiliary, who shared heartfelt, motivational, and inspiring remarks reflecting on the service and legacy of his own father, an Original Montford Point Marine. His words served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices, perseverance, and courage of the men who broke barriers and opened doors for future generations.

In addition to presenting the medal, Chapter 35 proudly unveiled and dedicated Mr. Petty's name on the Montford Point Marines Memorial Plaque, joining the growing list of Montford Point Marines with ties to the Middle Georgia area whose stories and contributions will never be forgotten.

What made today's ceremony especially meaningful was the presence of multiple generations of the Petty family, from elders who personally remembered Herbert Petty to the youngest family members who now carry his legacy forward. Their attendance served as a powerful reminder that the sacrifices of the Montford Point Marines continue to inspire families, communities, and our nation.

Chapter 35 and the Auxiliary remain committed to its mission of Preserving the Legacy by identifying, honoring, and recognizing the Original Montford Point Marines and ensuring their stories are shared for generations to come.

Congratulations to the Petty Family on this well-deserved recognition and thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this historic occasion a success.

Semper Fidelis.
