π OKAY WALTHOURVILLE, LETS TALK FIRE HYDRANTS! π
Anyone who has followed our page for a while knows that June is Hydrant Inspection Month for the Walthourville Fire Department.
NFPA 25 requires all fire hydrants to be inspected, lubricated, and flushed annually. Depending on the jurisdiction, these inspections may be conducted by the water department or fire personnel. These checks are vital to maintaining the water system and ensuring firefighters have reliable access to water during an emergency. It's not unusual to see our firefighters on nearly every corner operating hydrants and thoroughly flushing them, but here's the part you may not see...
The Walthourville Fire Department follows what we call a "Leave No Trace" approach to hydrant maintenance.
In some cases, the high-pressure water flow generated during hydrant flushing can disturb surrounding landscaping or undo some of the beautification efforts made by property owners. When that happens, the firefighter conducting the flush notifies their supervisor, and a trail vehicle is dispatched to repair any damage and restore the affected area. The trail vehicle also serves an important operational role by addressing minor hydrant issues that can be corrected by fire personnel and developing contingency plans whenever a hydrant is found to be out of service.
While hydrant flushing may appear routine, it is a critical part of ensuring our community remains protected and that our firefighters have the resources they need when seconds matter most.
