Descendants of Thomas and Emily Williams of Eastern NC Thomas and Emily Williams were slaves on the plantation of Stephen Williams of Rockfish Township of NC. They gained their freedom after the Civil War.

Thomas and Emily Williams had as many as ten children; however, the 1880 census report records the names of James, Jeremiah, William, Judy, Francenia, and Eldora.

Here's Granddaddy Luther's Death Certificate. It's definitive proof that he was originally Luther James Herring. Then he dropped Herring and started using James as his last name. However, legally he still died a Herring.

According to official court records, on February 23, 1925, Ella Williams, daughter of James and Jane Williams, married Luther James Herring, son of William and Ann Herring, in Sampson County. She was 20 years old and he was 28 years old. Before the marriage, Luther dropped his Herring surname and became Luther James.

EXCITING NEWS: We know now via DNA testing that Thomas and/or Emily Williams or their ancestors were from West Africa, most likely Cameroon, Congo, Nigeria, Ghana and that they came through Charleston, SC.

We have potentially found the gravesite of some of our descendants who died during slavery. However, we may have to do some legal wrangling to get access or possibly purchase it. I'll keep you posted.
