“During my tenure as a county commissioner from 2003-2014 and again from 2019-2022, my seatmates (Pam Ray, David Carey, Gregg Loney, Jim Johnson, and Senator Perry Dozier) and I built a record of a conservative approach to county budgeting with an emphasis on long-term sustainability. This fiscal responsibility is the approach I will bring to the office of County Auditor.

Some examples of our accomplishments are:
• established a 25% Current Expense Reserve Fund (“rainy day fund”)
• searched for a more competitive insurance plan for county employees saving the taxpayers approximately $1,000,000 in premium costs and established a dedicated fund with those savings to be used only to reduce future healthcare premium costs
• established a separate building fund for maintenance and replacement costs
• during a difficult budget year, when the county furloughed employees, each commissioner wrote a personal check to the county for the amount equivalent to their furlough days
• every office and department submitting a grant application was required to also complete a grant questionnaire to ensure no additional current expense dollars would be needed to secure the grant. When the grant funding ends so did any associated position.

Throughout my time as a member of the county legislative authority, I held the philosophy of living within the county’s means, protecting essential services, and making taxpayer dollars stretch as far as possible utilizing disciplined budgeting with an emphasis on financial sustainability.
I will take this conservative approach to managing the office of County Auditor.”

As I continue my campaign for Walla Walla County Auditor, I want to share a little about the experience and qualifications I would bring to the office.

I am a small business owner, so I understand the importance of accountability, customer service, accurate recordkeeping, and ensuring issues are handled correctly the first time. I also had the honor of serving as a Walla Walla County Commissioner for 16 years, where I gained firsthand experience with county government, budgets, public service, and the responsibility that comes with earning the trust of the voters.

During my time in public service, I also worked in Olympia to successfully lobby for and help pass legislation that benefited our county and our communities. That experience taught me how to build relationships, solve problems, and get results.

The Auditor’s Office plays a critical role in supervising fair elections, maintaining public records, providing licensing services, and auditing the county’s financial transactions. I believe my background in business, county government, and legislative advocacy has prepared me to serve in this position.

I am committed to serving as County Auditor with integrity, professionalism, transparency and common sense.

I would be honored to earn your vote, and sincerely appreciate your support.”

“I initially became acquainted with Greg Tompkins as a local businessman and when he was a commissioner, I worked with the commissioners on a zoning issue. Once I was elected as the commissioner for District 2, it became evident to me that Greg’s knowledge of county government and the offices and departments was extensive. In addition, he brought a businessman’s mentality and approach to the board particularly in our management of the county budget. Greg is extremely capable of administering one of the most crucial offices in the county which is overseeing every county expenditure and providing accurate information to the Board of County Commissioners to utilize in their financial decision making. Good decisions aren’t made with bad information.
One of the responsibilities of the County Auditor is to supervise every election in the county. Greg’s integrity will ensure the election process will be transparent and in compliance with Washington State law.
