In just his short time in the City, Chief Shoultz became a great partner to our department. He even made it a point to include our garage crew in some of the trainings so we could better understand the mechanics of the fire trucks.

Rest easy, Chief.

UPDATE: The water main has been repaired and all lanes are back open to traffic.
————————————————-
We're investigating a water main break on the northbound lanes of Fruit Ridge Ave - outside the AGO gas station - just north of the bridge.

Northbound traffic is down to one lane.

We ask that you avoid this area while we make the necessary repairs.

No timeline at this point, but we will keep you updated. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

This week is National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, and today our Public Works crew joined the Kent County Road Commission and regional partners for a kickoff event that brought the message home, literally.

Our road crew members were joined by their children and grandchildren, who shared what it means to have a parent or grandparent working alongside traffic every day, and what it feels like to wait for them to come home safely at night.

This year's theme is "Safe Actions Save Lives." When you drive through a work zone, please:
⚠️ Slow down
⚠️ Put the phone down
⚠️ Give crews the space they need to do their job safely

We know road work can be challenging during your commute. As always, we are grateful for your patience as we make these necessary repairs.

Reminder: Paving on O'Brien takes place today through Wednesday.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation as we improve this stretch of road!

Work begins next week to pave a stretch of O'Brien between Collindale and Wilson.

Milling will take place April 20–21, followed by paving from April 22–24.

The detour route (shown below) will be Collindale ➡️ Lake Michigan Dr ➡️ Wilson.

Local access will be maintained for residents, and school buses will be permitted through the work zone.

As always, all work is weather-dependent.

Our trail system continues to see strong use - and we’re investing to keep you safe while helping you connect to more trails, parks, and neighborhoods.

After a successful test crossing on Leonard at the Fred Meijer Standale Trail (FMST) in 2024 (image below), construction will begin soon on permanent pedestrian islands at these 3 locations:

🔸 Leonard and FMST
🔸 Waldorf and Kinney
🔸 Remembrance and Justin

These upgrades will improve visibility, slow traffic, and make it easier for you to safely access and enjoy our growing network of trails.
