Yesterday evening, a few of us took part in a small demonstration in front of the Slover Building just before Lt. Gov. Hashmi’s Energy Costs Listening Tour stop in Norfolk, VA. After the short rally, covered by three local TV stations, we attended the town hall-style meeting inside.
The event gave Virginians a chance to share concerns about rising energy costs and to hear from local leaders. More than 150 residents, community members and officials attended the event, the second of five planned stops. Delegates Jackie Glass, Nadarius Clark, and Phil Hernandez joined Hashmi for the discussion, which focused on utility costs, grid reliability, consumer protections and the potential impact of the proposed merger.
The proposed takeover of Dominion by NextEra would reshape Virginia's electric system for decades, yet state regulators must complete their review in just six months. Lt. Gov. Hashmi has called for a more thorough review process, including additional time for legislative oversight, to help ensure this decision is made transparently and with Virginia families — not out-of-state interests — at the forefront.
Attendees heard from their elected officials and subject matter experts, asked questions, and shared concerns about how the proposed takeover could affect their families and communities. Together, these conversations will help ensure Virginians have a voice before the Commonwealth makes one of the most consequential decisions in its energy history.
