โ˜€๏ธ June is here, and while the Florida heat is turning up, so is our commitment to keeping our waterways clean!

Join us for two opportunities to make a difference this month:

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ June 13 โ€“ Eau Gallie East Cleanup at Squid Lips
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ June 27 โ€“ SR528 Cleanup at Kayak Beach

Whether you're a longtime volunteer or joining us for the first time, every piece of trash removed helps protect our rivers, lagoon, wildlife, and community.

You'll notice our monthly Bracco Pond Park cleanup with the Cocoa Rotary is taking a summer break due to the heat. Don't worry, we'll be back out there in a couple of months when temperatures become a little more volunteer-friendly!

A special thank you to our June Sponsor of the Month, MBV Engineering ๐ŸŽ‰

Since 1983, MBV Engineering has provided comprehensive civil, structural, surveying, and environmental engineering services throughout the Space Coast and Treasure Coast. Their commitment to our community goes beyond engineering projectsโ€”they've been incredible supporters of Waterway Warriors and our mission to protect and restore local waterways.

Sponsors like MBV help provide the supplies, equipment, and resources that allow us to continue hosting impactful cleanup events throughout the year. Please join us in thanking them for their support!

๐Ÿ“ Mark your calendars, invite a friend, and let's keep making a difference together.

Many people ask whether the Lagoon is actually improving.

The honest answer is: some things are improving, while others remain challenging.

One encouraging sign comes from recent monitoring by the St. Johns River Water Management District, which found increases in seagrass coverage in several parts of the Indian River Lagoon. https://www.sjrwmd.com/2026/05/district-releases-updated-seagrass-data-showing-continued-expansion/

Seagrass is a key indicator of lagoon health, but it is only one indicator. Recovery is not happening everywhere at the same pace, and many restoration challenges remain.

We believe it's important to share both progress and setbacks as we work toward a healthier Lagoon.

Pause the Fertilizer to Protect the Lagoon.

Today marks the start of the Summer Fertilizer Blackout Period in the Indian River Lagoon watershed. From June 1 to September 30, nitrogen-containing fertilizer is prohibited from being applied to lawns and landscaping.

During Floridaโ€™s rainy season, fertilizer can quickly wash off lawns and into storm drains or be pushed past a lawn's root zone and into groundwater that flows directly to our waterways. Taking a break from fertilizing during the next four months helps reduce nutrient pollution and supports cleaner water, healthier seagrass, and a stronger Lagoon ecosystem.

The good news? Your lawn usually doesnโ€™t need fertilizer this time of year thanks to regular rains.

Small actions at home can make a big difference for the Indian River Lagoon. Stopping pollution at the source also makes SOIRL's large-scale pollution-reduction projects work more efficiently. Working together, we can get to a healthier Lagoon faster. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง

โณ Fertilizer-Free Season starts tomorrow! ๐ŸŒŠ

From June 1 through September 30, Brevard County's seasonal fertilizer restrictions help reduce nutrient runoff during the height of Florida's rainy season.

Summer storms can quickly move fertilizer from lawns into groundwater, storm drains and connected waterways โ€” and those pathways flow to the Indian River Lagoon, often with no treatment in between.

Many Lagoon Loyal households across Brevard are already keeping it fertilizer-free this summer.
