Meet Gilbert: At 47, this electrician is carrying not just groceries, but hope—picking up food for himself and his 74-year-old mother at Ccap Wi******er.

When we met him, he was pursuing mechatronics at Laurel Ridge Community College—just 2 classes away from graduation—while on SSI/disability.

A return visitor, he thoughtfully strolled the aisles with a volunteer’s help, first selecting hygiene essentials, then staples like peanut butter, chicken, rice, beans, bread, fruit, tomato sauce, and fresh produce: carrots, potatoes, squash, onions—and much more.

He says this pantry visit makes a huge difference—stocking about 3 weeks’ worth of food.

“It depends on how much you eat,” he reflects. “I try not to eat much, but my mother eats more—she says, ‘when you're hungry, you're hungry.’”

Do you have the coolest pet? Now’s your chance to prove it! 🐈🐕

This week begins the countdown to compete for the coveted title of “Coolest Pet in the Shenandoah Valley.”

📆Beginning September 8, all Staunton, Augusta County, and Waynesboro residents are eligible to enter their pets to compete for prestige, prizes, and local fame.

It’s only $10 to enter and $1 to vote.

All funds raised benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s School Break Box program, which provides non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to children and their families during holiday breaks when school meals are unavailable. 🧡

Don’t live in the Shenandoah Valley? You can still vote for your favorite pet to help us reach our goal of $10,000 for local kids.

Huge thank you to the Shenandoah Valley Kiwanis Club for organizing the event.

On a warm summer Tuesday morning, Andrea and her almost 3-year-old daughter, Caroline, wait in their car at the Mobile Food Pantry in Scottsville.

She’s planning a mermaid‑themed birthday party for Caroline, something that brings her joy even as she balances work, raising a toddler, and caring for an ailing parent.

A former volunteer at this very distribution, Andrea no longer has the time to help now that she’s working, parenting, and supporting her mother through cancer treatment.

From volunteering, she knew the Mobile Food Pantry could help extend her food budget by providing “plenty of fruits, vegetables, and meats.” These are “definitely helpful until we can go food shopping the next time.”

Andrea receives a few hundred dollars in SNAP food assistance, which she works strategically to make last all month by shopping discounts and sales. “It’s insane how expensive everything is,” she says.

Andrea wishes for a little more SNAP assistance so she could buy in bulk and stretch her family's food budget even further. Until then, the Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry in Scottsville will be a steady source of support for Andrea and the entire community.

Last year, 56% of parents based in the U.S. reported paying more for formula than they were comfortable with, according to a 2026 survey by Organic Life Start. 🍼

A reported 60% spend over $200 each month on formula.

Meanwhile, Virginia is one of the most expensive states in the country for childcare. According to the “Child Care in America: 2025 Price & Supply Report,” dual-parent households in Virginia would have to spend an average of 11% of their income on center-based childcare for an infant. For single parents, that number is a striking 39%. ❗

As rising costs continue to put pressure on caregivers and their families, it’s increasingly essential to contact lawmakers, support our local hunger relief network, and extend kindness and community to neighbors who may be struggling. Because everyone should have enough to eat. 👪
