"Disasters start and end locally."

For Jeremy, Hurricane Ike didn't just bring storm surges beyond what he'd ever experienced - it brought the threat home, to his own family and community.

When disaster strikes, Watch Duty is here to support you AND your local first responders with accurate, understandable information.

Hi from Geoff 👋 - a Watch Duty flooding reporter based in Colorado:

Favorite landscape: The riverside for me! Every since leaving home, I've lived and worked within a mile or two of a river (often much closer) and it's peaceful like nothing else I've known.

Why do you report for Watch Duty?
To serve my neighbors, near and far. We're all one big community on this planet and reporting is one small way I can help it grow and thrive.

What qualities make a good Watch Duty reporter?
Patience, an eye to detail, and a love of caffeine never hurts.

What song are you blasting in your car lately?
The Mountain Song by Tophouse

What is your surprising hobby?
I'm learning to play the mountain dulcimer- slowly.

"When you don't know, you don't know."

Larry's story is why we do what we do. When misinformation was circulating, his daughter was sent into absolute panic — even though her family was safe in their location. You shouldn't have to be an expert to understand if you're at risk or not. That's why we expanded to cover major flooding emergencies and get you the info you need.

Just like wildfires, flood warning systems are too slow and fragmented to keep people informed and safe.

Watch Duty is responding by expanding to cover major floods. Open the Watch Duty app and toggle on in 'layers' to see real-time flood data and mapping, alongside our existing wildfire coverage.

If you haven’t already, download or update the Watch Duty app to access our new flood coverage: watchduty.org

The popular wildfire tracking app is adding flood monitoring to its platform. It’s the first new disaster alert on the service, with many more to come.

WATCH: Our cofounder & CEO John Mills announces Watch Duty's first major expansion beyond wildfire: major flood events, live across the U.S. Here's what to know:

➡️ What's new: The same Watch Duty map you trust for fire now shows clear flood information like National Weather Service warnings, precipitation rates, live river gauge data, &, in the case of catastrophic flooding, real-time human reporting and alerts.

➡️ Why it matters: Flooding is the deadliest U.S. natural disaster, and just like our experience with wildfires, flood warning systems are proving too slow and fragmented to meet the moment.

➡️ How it works: For everyday awareness, live flood data flows onto the map automatically. During catastrophic flood events, our trained reporters add live verification and on-the-ground context — the same network you trust during fire.

Available everywhere in the U.S. starting today. Watch John's message & turn on flood from the Layers menu in your Watch Duty app: bit.ly/441gSN7

Meet Evan - a Watch Duty Staff Reporter based in Montana.

Why do you report for Watch Duty?
I believe in the importance of the mission, and believe in the impact we have on the community.

What skills help you report for Watch Duty?
My experience and background working and volunteering for my local fire department give my invaluable insight into how fire works. I like to think I stay calm under pressure and multitask well, both of which are critical to doing this job!

Favorite landscape?
I’ve lived and worked in and around the forest my entire life. I just love it!

What should people know about Watch Duty?
Behind each notification, incident, and report, there is a whole team of people. You only see one name in the app, but this is truly a huge group effort.
