The members of the Dickerson Run Liberty and Vanderbilt Volunteer Fire Department extend our deepest condolences to the members of the Connellsville Township VFD on the passing of Joseph L. Brooks.

Chief Brooks dedicated more than 50 years of service to his department and community, including over 20 years as Fire Chief. A lifetime of commitment like that leaves a lasting impact not only on his department, but on the entire fire service.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the members of Connellsville Township VFD during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Chief. Thank you for your service.

I just want to personally say thank you.

My heart is full seeing the incredible support that was shown as we honored Pete Gray. On behalf of myself and the Dickerson Run, Liberty, & Vanderbilt Volunteer Fire Department, thank you to every department and firefighter who stood beside us during this difficult time.

A very special thank you to North Union Township Volunteer Fire Department for providing stand-by coverage so our members could fully focus on honoring one of our own.

I also want to sincerely thank Everson Volunteer Fire Company and New Haven Hose Company for bringing your ladder trucks and helping create such a beautiful flag display. It was a powerful and unforgettable tribute that meant so much to me, our members, and Pete’s family.

Thank you as well to Dawson VFC, Monarch Vfd, Morrell Volunteer Fire Co., Perry Twp. Vol. Fire Dept., and South Connellsville Volunteer Fire Company for your presence, support, and brotherhood. Seeing so many departments come together was a reminder of what the fire service truly stands for.

To every firefighter who attended the Firefighters Service, thank you for taking the time to come pay your respects. Looking around and seeing so many firefighters gathered together in Pete’s honor was something I will never forget.

Pete gave 64 years of his life to this department. He helped shape who we are today, and the respect shown in his honor speaks volumes about the kind of man he was and the impact he had on so many people.

Personally, I cannot thank everyone enough for helping us give him the honor he so deeply deserved. The love and support shown over the last two days has meant more than words can say. It reminded me that this fire service is truly a family, and Pete’s legacy will continue to live on through all of us.

Thank you all.

— Chief Shane Lynn

Original Post

For over 60 years, Harry “Pete” Gray has answered the call.

He has served the Dickerson Run, Liberty & Vanderbilt Volunteer Fire Department with dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment. Over the decades, Pete has held every leadership role within our department, except Chaplain, faithfully guiding, mentoring, and standing beside generations of firefighters. He has been a steady presence, a trusted voice, and a true pillar of our organization.

Pete has given the fire service a lifetime of commitment. Now it is our turn to show him what he means to all of us.

We are planning a fire department parade past his home so he can watch from his porch and see firsthand the respect and gratitude he has earned over six decades of service.

This is an open invitation to any fire department that would like to participate.

We are aiming for Saturday, March 7th. Due to weather and circumstances, final details and confirmation will be shared as we get closer to the date.

If your department is interested in taking part, please reach out so we can coordinate staging and timing.

We ask that this remain a surprise for Pete. Please be mindful of discussing details publicly so we can preserve this special moment for him.

Please share this post to help us spread the word throughout the fire service. Let’s make sure every department that would like to take part has the opportunity to do so.

Let’s come together to honor a man who has helped shape our department and our community for more than 60 years.
