UPDATE: Suspicious Object Reported in the Sheyenne River

The Valley City Police Department is providing an update regarding the report of a suspicious, person-shaped object observed on live-scope sonar in the Sheyenne River on June 12, 2026.

Following the initial report, an extensive search of the area was conducted with the assistance of the Jamestown Regional Dive Team and Valley City Fire and Rescue. The dive team utilized specialized underwater search equipment, including a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), to thoroughly examine the reported location.

After an extensive search, no object matching the original description was located. Search personnel identified only tree debris and other natural materials within the area of concern.

At this time, no evidence has been discovered indicating any threat to public safety. The Valley City Police Department will continue to monitor the river and investigate any additional information that may become available.

The Valley City Police Department reminds residents and visitors to exercise caution when near rivers and other waterways. River conditions can change rapidly, and hazards such as strong currents, submerged debris, unstable banks, and varying water depths may be present. Individuals are encouraged to supervise children closely, wear appropriate flotation devices when participating in water-related activities, and remain aware of their surroundings.

Anyone who observes suspicious activity, potential hazards, or anything unusual along the Sheyenne River is encouraged to contact the Valley City Police Department or local emergency services so the information can be properly evaluated.

❗️Forecasted Severe Weather for Tonight❗️

Please stay alert for any warnings that are issued for severe weather and even the chances for tornados. Have a safety plan in place. Stay safe!

There is a risk for severe storms Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning within portions of eastern North Dakota into northwest and west-central Minnesota. A squall line is expected to move quickly east/northeast thru the area with severe wind gusts 60 to 75 mph or higher possible. Large hail to golf balls and a tornado is also possible mainly as the line is moving thru eastern North Dakota. With this event largely occurring overnight, make sure to have a way to be alerted if a warning is issued for your area, as well as have multiple ways to receive warnings. Also, plan now and know where to go should a warning be issued for your area
