This afternoon, as Vallejoans enjoyed the 40th annual , I had the privelege of watching of San Diego take the helm as President of the US Conference of Mayors, alongside our state senator and former West Sac mayor .

At our most recent City Council meeting, Vallejo proclaimed June 2026 as both Pride Month and Phillipine Cultural Month. What an honor to be alongside these two incredible LGBT Filipino trailblazers, celebrating the first openly gay United States Conference of Mayors President during Pride Month and on the day of Vallejo's finest celebration of Filipino heritage and culture.

Congratualtions again to Mayor Gloria, who will serve as "America's Mayor" for the next year!

And for those in Vallejo, there's still time to stop by Pista at the Mare Island Coal Sheds. The festival runs until 6pm.

This week, May 17-23, is National Public Works Week. Please join me in thanking our amazing Vallejo Public Works team for all they do for our community!

Public Works crews maintain our public spaces and are hard at work on the road repair that is a top priority for all of us. They are also critical in making special events happen - whether it's a festival, parade, the weekly farmer's market, a 5k, or a ceremonial street renaming.

Thank you Vallejo PW employees for all you to do keep us safe!

Updates on the Highway 37 Fairgrounds Drive Interchange project led by the Solano Transportation Authority and Caltrans Bay Area-District 4:

Traffic patterns will change next weekend, beginning with a closure of the interchange overnight from the evening of Friday, May 15, to the morning of Saturday, May 16. Fairgrounds Drive also will be closed during that time from Sage St to Gateway Dr. Please exercise caution and follow all posted signs, including temporary traffic lane shifts and detour signage during the closure.

The final phase of construction will include paving and installation of bike and pedestrian pathways, with completion expected this July.

Thank you KTVU Fox 2 for visiting Vallejo last week to cover the construction at the Highway 37 Fairgrounds Drive interchange.

Traffic patterns will change this weekend with an overnight closure of the exit the night of Friday, May 15, and reopening with the new diverging diamond layout on Saturday morning. The full project, including paving and bike/pedestrian pathways, will be completed in July.

This will be the first diverging diamond interchange in the Bay Area, and the 2nd in California. The project is projected to reduce congestion and make the intersection safer for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians. This is the first phase of a broader overhaul of Highway 37, including plans to elevate and widen the highway all the way to 101 in Marin County.

IMPROVED TRAFFIC? A unique "crisscross" traffic configuration is coming to the North Bay as Caltrans and the Solano Transportation Authority prepare to open a new interchange.

Congratulations to the Cal Maritime Class of 2026! Wishing you fair winds and following seas, and can't wait to see all that you go on to accomplish.

This year marked the final graduating class of California State University Maritime Academy, as future graduates will receive diplomas from Cal Poly Solano and Cal Poly Maritime Academy. We are fortunate to have such an exceptional institution and partner here in Vallejo. Thanks to all who have worked hard to ensure a smooth merger, and to the new alumni who will lead us into this new chapter.

Last month I was honored to join fellow mayors from around the world at Harvard University as part of the program. Vallejo's selection and participation in this program is an important step in bringing resources to our city that can be used to drive measurable and meaningful results for our residents.

In addition to resource sharing and ideas exchanges with fellow mayors, the program hosted a "Meet Your Hometown Mayor" event at Harvard where I was excited to meet a Jesse Bethel High grad studying at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, as well as the graduate fellow who will be joining us in Vallejo this summer courtesy of the Bloomberg Center for Cities.

I also had the opportunity to meet Professor Cornell William Brooks, former president of the national NAACP, who teaches a course titled "Creating Justice in Real Time." Graduate students in his course are partnering with our office to explore issues around police misconduct and reform in Vallejo, and I am incredibly grateful for their efforts and looking forward to sharing more about the project.

As we head into spring, I want to share a few updates in what continues to be an incredibly busy year.

The Vallejo City Council continues to work through a packed list of critical items - including labor negotiations with three unions, performance evaluations of the City Manager and City Attorney, and finally addressing the city's longstanding structural budget deficit through the mid-year and FY26-27 budget processes. We anticipate meeting nearly every week between now and June to get through this important work, so please keep an eye out for those notices - particularly the budget and goal setting workshops.

I appreciate every opportunity I get to spend time with Vallejo students - and this month that has included visiting Grace Patterson Elementary for Read Across America Day and a field trip to Rush Ranch with 6th graders from Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy led by the Solano Resource Conservation District. I also had the privilege of joining the Vallejo Little League on Saturday for the kickoff of their season.

I want to thank the 100+ plus Mare Island residents who joined a community meeting at beautiful St. Peter's Chapel last month, and all those who have joined me at community and neighborhood meetings to share questions and thoughts.

I remain optimistic about the opportunities before us, but we have extremely difficult work ahead to ensure that our city is on the right path, and it is going to take all of us together.
