Good morning HD177!
Today is the first day of the Special Session, and I’ll be right here live under the Gold Dome. Stay tuned for my updates.
Governor Brian Kemp has officially called the Georgia General Assembly into a Special Session beginning TODAY June 17, 2026
A Special Session is a meeting of the legislature outside of the regular legislative calendar and is called when specific issues require immediate attention.
This Special Session has been called for two primary purposes:
📍 Redistricting and District Maps
The General Assembly will consider legislation related to Georgia's congressional, state senate, state house, and other elected district boundaries following recent court decisions. These discussions could impact how communities are represented in future elections.
📍 Technical Updates to State Law
Lawmakers will also address implementation issues related to legislation scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026.
Why does this matters?
District maps help determine how communities are represented at every level of government. The boundaries of these districts influence who represents you, how communities are grouped together, and how residents' voices are reflected in the legislative process.
While redistricting can sound technical, it directly affects representation, voting districts, and the future of communities across Georgia.
As the Special Session approaches, it is important for residents to stay informed, understand the issues being discussed, and remain engaged in the legislative process.
An informed community is a stronger community.
